CBN HAS MY BACKING IN REPLACING NAIRA NOTES, SAYS PRESIDENT BUHARI

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday said that the decision of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to launch new designs and replace high value Naira notes had his support and is convinced that the nation will gain a lot by doing so.

Speaking in a Hausa radio interview with the famous journalist Halilu Ahmed Getso, and Kamaluddeen Sani Shawai to be aired Wednesday Morning on Tambari TV on Nilesat, President Buhari said reasons given to him by the CBN convinced him that the economy stood to benefit from reduction in inflation, currency counterfeiting and the excess cash in circulation.

He said he did not consider the period of three months for the change to the new notes as being short.

”People with illicit money buried under the soil will have a challenge with this but workers, businesses with legitimate incomes will face no difficulties at all.”

In the interview, the President also addressed issues of food security and national security, among others.

With alert, terror threat looming, Atiku holds crucial meeting with officials of US States Department

With alert and terror threat looming, Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar on Friday held a crucial meeting with officials of the US States Department in Washington DC.

The meeting, which focused primarily on enhancing cooperation with the U.S. authorities on Nigeria’s security challenges, elections and democracy was led by Atiku and Assistant Secretary, States Department, Bureau of African Affairs, Molly Phee.

According to sources from the PDP presidential candidate’s side, “the meeting last night with officials of the States Department could not have come at a better time with the terrorist threat alert by the U.S. UK and Canada and the withdrawal of its non essential staff by the U.S Embassy in Nigeria.”

PRESIDENT BUHARI TO SECURITY AGENCIES, ALL CITIZENS: BE ALERT, DON’T PANIC

President Muhammadu advises the nation’s security establishment and entire citizens to continue being vigilant and careful with security, saying it is important to avoid panic.

He urges citizens to remain calm. The recent changes in travel advice from the US and UK governments should not be a cause for panic.

Nigeria is no exception in having terror threats listed in foreign government’s travel advice to their citizens. UK and US travel advisories also state there is a high likelihood of terror attacks in many Western European nations. Indeed, the UK and US advice to their respective citizens for travel to one another’s countries contain the same warning. Unfortunately, terror is a reality the world over.

However, it does not mean an attack in Abuja is imminent. Since the July prison raid, security measures have been reinforced in and around the FCT. Heightened monitoring and interception of terrorist communications ensure potential threats are caught further upstream.

Attacks are being foiled. Security agents are proactively rooting out threats to keep citizens safe – much of their work unseen and necessarily confidential.

Nigerians’ safety remains the highest priority of government. Security services are working around the clock to keep harm at bay.

The President gives assurances that the government is on top of the security situation in country.

While noting, in addition that security threats are real and have been with us for a long while, the nation’s military, the police and other security agencies have shown a capability to deal with it, as is evident from the fact that a majority of our partners, including the United Nations agencies in our midst have not seen the threat as being sufficient to warrant any form of panic or order citizen evacuations.

The President stresses that that while being security conscious, being alert and careful is crucial, it is also important that responsible members of the society do not create situations leading to unnecessary panic.

President Buhari commends the military and other security agencies for the recent turn around in the nation’s security, and directs that additional precautionary measures be put in place and that these must not slacken now, and during the upcoming festive period.

President Buhari expresses optimism that given the on-going efforts on the part of the military and other security and intelligence agencies with the active support of the civilian population, the nation will emerge victorious against the current challenges facing it.

FESTUS KEYAMO AND HIS ERRATIC VITUPERATION

By Dele Momodu

I have just read Festus Keyamo’s response to my critique of the APC Manifesto of lies. I’m not surprised that all he could do was yell as usual without examining or practically addressing the content of my article. Unfortunately, he picked on a wrong customer.

Let me take a few minutes to educate this young friend of mine who has since become a shadow of his old self since he was offered an appointment, that makes him look so incompetent, by President Muhammadu Buhari. Any self-respecting soul would have since resigned but Festus Keyamo was not at home the day shame came visiting. The Ministry in which he’s a mere figurehead is in total shambles and only a Bola Tinubu would have given the job of a spokesperson to such a certified nuisance.

What did Festus say I did wrong? He quoted copiously from an article I wrote about two years ago, which the Tinubu media teams have been using to campaign endlessly, because they have no stronger voice of their own. I’m indeed flattered.

There is no doubt that I love Tinubu the Man but I disagree vehemently with Tinubu the Politician. This is not the first time I will say it publicly. Since I now have the opportunity of presenting the bones of my disagreement with Tinubu, courtesy of Festus Keyamo, I will lay them bare.

Tinubu has declined in the last few years. I used to see him as a man of his people but no supposed generalissimo would ever abandon his people in the days of trouble and tribulation. None of the people around him could tell him the truth for pecuniary reasons. He knows it himself but he desperately wants to be President of Nigeria, by fire by force, after he has lost most of his formidable foot soldiers, and now relying on outsiders to activate and actualize his lifelong ambition for him, which is his legitimate right. But Nigerians have the right to scrutinise his action plans.

When he was Governor, I supported him from the distance while he surrounded himself with some people who pretended to love him. When he was busy distributing land to journalists in Lagos, I refused to collect my papers because I love my freedom, the reason I was able to tell him truth regularly.

When he was to be impeached for some infractions, and many of his so-called loyalists were washing off their hands clean, like the Biblical Pontius Pilate, my very dear friend, Tokunbo Afikuyomi, stood by him like the Rock of Gibraltar. But how did he repay Tokunbo who took all the bullets? This shameless Festus Keyamo was one of those who wanted to run Tinubu out of town. Nduka Obaigbena and I had to step in at some point before he could consider Tokunbo for anything. Tokunbo had wanted to be the Governor of Lagos State and Tinubu goaded him on and allowed him to waste his resources. It was when I got Chief Harry Akande to give Tokunbo the ANPP Governorship ticket for Lagos State that Tinubu suddenly realised he had offended his “suicide bomber!”

During his battle to stop Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki from becoming the Senate President, we all saw how the younger politician outsmarted him. I had warned him to leave the gentleman alone because no one should play God, but he went ahead until the gentleman floored him effortlessly. During his egoistic battle against Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola, I wrote an article asking him not to try it because their marriage was consummated in heaven. Somehow, he backtracked. In spite of him, Fashola continues to remain relevant in Nigerian politics.

Again, when he continued his tradition of “hire-and-fire” and started plotting against Governor Akinwumi Ambode, I buried my love for Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to speak up against the injustice of removing a great technocrat who was doing well in Lagos. The President of Nigeria, the Vice President, the Governors’ Forum and many distinguished Nigerians begged him to no avail. He must have his way always. The same personalities are now the people he needs and wants to make him President. Nigeria is looking for a President, with compassion and competence, not an Emperor!

Tinubu is a man who loves to bait the Masquerade with a goat but will never release the rope. That’s why he kept losing his best friends like Musiliu Obanikoro, Ambode, Muiz Banire, Opeyemi Bamidele, Rauf Aregbesola, Fuad Oki, Yemi Osinbajo, Adenrele Adeniran-Ogunsanya Babafemi Ojudu, Rahman Owokoniran, Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, Aminu Tambuwal, Yakubu Dogara, Nasir El Rufai, Babachir Lawal, Rotimi Akeredolu, Kayode Fayemi, Aro Lambo, Adeseye Ogunlewe, Jimi Agbaje, Ibikunle Amosun, Femi Pedro, Gbenga Daniel, Kofo Akerele Bucknor. Remi Adikwu Bakare, Tunji Abayomi, Tokunbo Ajasin, Mulikat Akande. Chief Dapo Sarumi, Adeniran Ogunsanya Amos Akingba, Bolaji Akinyemi, Mojisola Akinfenwa,

John Oyegun, Godwin Obaseki, Yinka Odumakin, Papa Ayo Adebanjo, Papa Abraham Adesanya, Dupe Adelaja, Toyin Fagbayi, Papa Olanihun Ajayi, Babafemi Ojudu, Prince Dipo Eludoyin, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who seems to be aloof to Tinubu’s campaign, and so many others, even if some of them have since reconciled due to political expediency. Tinubu personally decimated the pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere, after enjoying their massive support when we came back from exile in 1998.

For me, his biggest sin is the fact that he went funereally quiet when APC became a totally hopeless case, just because he’s hoping to inherit Buhari’s structures.

Lastly, I hope he would have the energy to make himself available for a rigorous scrutiny of his Manifesto. He wants to renew what actually? He wants to turn Nigeria into another Lagos? Many of those who love him genuinely know that the demystification process has started. They wished he had not subjected himself to this agony and anguish. But they can only say so in hushed whispers. Nigerians deserve better. I have been actively involved in politics. I hope Keyamo does not delude himself that I cannot make my own choices. I certainly have, and done so openly boldly. Atiku Abubakar is my choice. He is not a pretender to the throne. He has pursued his dreams with grace, good comportment, self-discipline and uncommon equanimity.

Festus and his gang keep quoting a 2019 article that I wrote. They should go and frame my other writings too. As for that political neophyte called Keyamo, he still has a lot to learn while trying hard to be a lap-dog. He should be reminded that he is still a Minister of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, paid at tax-payer’s expense. He should learn to moderate his undue exuberance.

I could go on ad infinitum but let’s cool temper for now.

2023: SERAP asks Atiku, Tinubu, Obi, others to publish sources of their campaign funding

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent an open letter to presidential candidates ahead of the February 2023 presidential election, urging them to demonstrate leadership by directing their “campaign councils and political parties to regularly and widely publish the sources of their campaign funding.”

SERAP said: “We are concerned about the vulnerability of political parties to corruption. Disproportionally large donations seeking specific outcomes or preferential treatment can subvert the wider public interest.”

In the open letter dated 29 October, 2022 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “Transparency would help to control inappropriate influence on political candidates, ensure fairness, equality, and accountability in Nigeria’s democracy.”

SERAP also said, “Transparency in campaign funding would improve public trust in Nigeria’s politicians and political parties, and show your commitment to prevent and combat corruption if elected.”

According to SERAP, “If Nigerians know where the money is coming from, they can scrutinise the details, and hold to account the candidate and party that receive it.”

The letter, read in part: “SERAP would consider appropriate legal actions to hold you and your political party to account for any infractions of the requirements of campaign funding, as provided for by the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended], the Electoral Act and international standards, even after the 2023 elections.”

“SERAP urges you to sign ‘transparency pacts’ that would mandate you to disclose the identities of donors and widely publish donations and contributions including on your party website and social media platforms.”

“Party corruption undermines the legitimacy of government, public trust and, ultimately, democracy.”

“Opacity in campaign funding can distort the electoral competition and lead to state capture by wealthy politicians and individuals, and encourage politicians to divert public resources for political purposes.”

“Transparency in campaign funding would ensure fair and open elections, and address concerns about undue influence by the more economically advantaged and privileged individuals, as well as prevent corruption of the electoral process.”

“Political parties provide the necessary link between voters and government. No other context is as important to democracy than elections to public office. Nigerians therefore must be informed about the sources of campaign funding of those who seek their votes.”

“SERAP also urges you to urgently invite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to monitor campaign funding and expenditures by your political party.”

“The UN Convention against Corruption to which Nigeria is a state party obligates states parties to enhance transparency in the funding of candidates for elected public office and, where applicable, the funding of political parties.”

“Similarly, the African Union Convention on Preventing and Combating Corruption which Nigeria has also ratified requires states parties to incorporate the principle of transparency into funding of political parties.”

“Sections 225 and 226 of the Nigerian Constitution and Sections 86, 87 and 90 the Electoral Act 2022 demonstrate the importance of transparency and accountability in party and campaign finances, and why political parties must be proactive in disclosing the sources of their donations and contributions, and how they spend the funds they receive.”

“Please let us know if you and your political party are willing to commit to the issues outlined in this letter.”

Presidential candidates for Nigeria’s general elections in 2023 include: Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP); Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of All Progressive Congress (APC); Mr Peter Obi of Labour Party (LP); Mr Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP); and Professor Peter Umeadi of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA).

Others include: Prince Malik Ado-Ibrahim of Young Progressive Party (YPP); Omoyele Sowore of Africa Action Congress (AAC); Prince Adewole Adebayo of Social Democratic Party (SDP); Mr Kola Abiola of Peoples Redemption Party (PRP); Professor Christopher Imumulen of Accord Party (AP); Dumebi Kachikwu of African Democratic Congress (ADC); and Yusuf Mamman Dan Talle of Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

YOU ARE THE FACES OF NIGERIA, PRESIDENT BUHARI TELLS NIGERIANS IN SOUTH KOREA; RESTATES COMMITMENT TO DEEPENING DEMOCRACY AT HOME

President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Seoul, Republic of Korea, reminded Nigerians resident in the Asian country that they are the “faces of Nigeria,” and should endeavour to project a positive image of the country through their actions, characters, conducts and general comportments.

The President stated this during an interactive meeting with the leadership and select members of the Nigerian Community as part of his engagements at the end of the First World Bio Summit 2022, while urging them to remain good ambassadors of Nigeria at all times.

According to President Buhari, “As law abiding citizens of our great country, I advise that you replicate the excellent Nigerian virtues by coexisting peacefully with your hosts and abide by the laws of the land. You must always strive to eschew any acts of lawlessness in your day-to-day activities and to take it as major responsibility to encourage other Nigerians to always remain of excellent behaviour.”

Further reminding them that “Nigeria is and will always be our only country,” he enjoined them “to always pray and work for the peace and prosperity of our beloved country. Let us desist from any acts capable of causing disaffection among our people. Nigerians in diaspora in many countries of the world have achieved tremendous successes through hard work, resilience and resourcefulness and I have no doubt in my mind that similar success stories will continue to be replicated amongst the Nigerian diaspora community in the Republic of South Korea.”

The Nigerian leader, who assured them that the Federal Government, through the Embassy will always strive to protect their interests by ensuring that “none of you is unjustly treated at all times,” appealed to them to “see all Nigerians as brothers and sisters irrespective of tribe and religion and collectively work to positively project the image of the country.”

On preparations for the 2023 national elections, which he said, are in active stages, the President sought for their “prayers and support to enable us transit peacefully to the next administration and deepen the democratic processes in our country,” expressing delight that the “outcomes of the last four off-season elections, have left us with great optimism for better conducted and acceptable 2023 elections.”

Speaking earlier on behalf of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), South Korea, the President, Chiemeka Ndukwu, had thanked President Buhari for creating Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NiDCOM) as well as “approving a production line for international passports which we now have here in the Republic of Korea,” adding that “This has eased the stress of going to China, Malaysia or back home for intervention.”

He appealed to the Federal Government to reach a Bilateral Labour Agreement (BLA) with the Republic of Korea, stressing that if signed, it “will not just create job opportunities and increase foreign exchange remittance,” but “also ensure the transfer of technology and skills since these trainees will not just return to Nigeria with enough capital to set up factories and businesses that will employ people, they will also be returning with the skills and technology they acquired.”

Other prominent NIDO members who also attended the interactive session were drawn from construction, insurance, private business sectors as well as male and female representatives of students undergoing post-graduate studies in specialized fields.

It is noteworthy that Engr. Dogara Gani who specializes in smart farming through drone technology; Ms. Hussaina Abdullahi, an IT specialist; and Dr. Kalu Ekpeghere, an assistant professor in environmental engineering at Woosong University, were among other well-established Nigerians in South Korea who also participated in the meeting coordinated by NiDCOM Chairman, Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

GOV AKEREDOLU CELEBRATES DR ADEBIMPE OKUNADE @90

Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON on Saturday joined family, friends and associates to celebrate Dr. Adebimpe Olutayo Okunade on her 90th Birth Anniversary.

The Governor graced the 90th Birthday thanksgiving service held at All Saints’ Church Jericho, Ibadan, Oyo State Capital.

In his homily, the officiating minister, Most Reverend Dr. Tunji Olaosebikan urged the congregation to be appreciative to God for protection and provision.

2023: ANTECEDENTS OF CANDIDATES SHOULD BE PROOF OF CAPACITY – GOV AKEREDOLU

  • Says Dubious People Want To Take Advantage Of Religion
  • Hails President Buhari For Bequeathing Legacy Of Electoral Integrity

Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum and Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, has said the antecedents of prominent candidates in the forthcoming presidential election should be the evidence of their capacity to lead the country.

Governor Akeredolu charged the people of Nigeria to keep the debate on equity and justice alive for peace to reign in the land.

He added that the south must produce the next President in the spirit of equity and fairness.

The Governor spoke on Friday at the 16th Jesus Festival Dinner of the Ibadan Anglican Diocese held at the Ibadan Civic Centre, Agodi, Ibadan. He was the Chairman of the occasion. Engineer Remi Osiberu,FNSE was the Special Guest of Honour.

Governor Akeredolu, who noted that competence and integrity should be the criteria for representation, stressed that the recent debate on representation on account of faith is most unnecessary.

He said: ”As Christians, we must not only be prayerful. It is important that we adopt proactive measures in our bid to protect ourselves against any evil design. We must be vigilant and ready to challenge all actions which threaten to relegate our collective interest to the background.

“In the same vein, we must be wary of the antics of the cunning and deceitful who may wish to exploit the challenges to advance their destructive designs.

“In as much as we encourage full participation of Christians in politics, our involvement must not be used to create disaffection among the various ethnic and religious groups in the country. We must resist the attempts by some elements to use religion to perpetuate crisis.

“Christians are yet to come together to elect representatives who must vie for political offices. Any individual aspiring to serve in any capacity should project his or her strength of character rather than hide under an omnibus but clearly dubious forum to appropriate our collective rights for personal consideration.

“The recent debate on representation on account of faith is most unnecessary. Competence and integrity should be the criteria for representation.

“All those who do not wish to be ruled by persons of dubious character should endeavour to be active in the days ahead. Let all those with their PVCs vote for candidates of their choice. All candidates should be put to the strictest proof of their claims.

“Anyone who exhibits any shred of doubt should be rejected roundly. The antecedents of prominent candidates in the forthcoming presidential elections, and even ALL elections, should be evidence of capacity. The manifesto belongs, largely, to the party.

“We must do more than criticism in the next elections or be ready to be ruled by those with no enviable pedigree. We must participate or be damned.

“We must tell all self-appointed spokespersons of the Christian faith to leave partisan politics for the practitioners and concentrate on the works for which they are called or appointed.”

Governor Akeredolu, who recalled that the political space was awash with embarrassing tales of assassination, thuggery and ballot snatching in the past, hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for setting the country free from the evils.

He said the President is determined to bequeath a legacy of electoral integrity to the country, adding that Election results are becoming more credible with reduced volume of election petition cases in the courts.

“Above all, the President has not allowed partisan interest to becloud his sense of fairness. He congratulates, almost always, whoever becomes victorious regardiess of the political parties to which the person belongs.

“On the whole, there is the pervasive feeling of improvement in the electoral process. The country can still do better than what is obtainable now. We are at a point where all of us must resolve to take more than a passing interest in what affects our general interest as citizens of the country.

“We must resist the temptation to stand aloof while others determine our collective destiny as a people. We must keep the debate on equity and justice alive for peace to reign in the land,” the Governor said.

Earlier in his Exhortation, the Bishop of Ibadan Diocese, Most Rev’d Dr. J.O Akinfenwa, congratulated Governor Akeredolu on his recent national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger, CON, describing it as well deserved.

He noted the Governor’s numerous roles to make life better for the needy especially by promoting adequate security for their lives and property.

The cleric encouraged Nigerians to be vigilant and select credible leaders during the fast approaching election, urging more prayers for the nation.

At the event were some members of the state executive council and APC candidates.

Highlight of the event was presentation of award to the Governor and his family in recognition of his commitment to the security of lives and property of the people, his interventions on national issues and contributions to governance and Law profession.

According to the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands and Housing, Engr Raimi Aminu, the roads being reconstructed are existing roads built by the government several years ago and are already in bad shapes with potholes and failed sections within the town.

Speaking during an unscheduled inspection visit on Thursday, the Commissioner appreciated Governor Akeredolu for his unwavering commitment to road infrastructure in the state.

He said the Governor’s efforts on infrastructure development has eased the suffering of the people, despite the scarce resources.

Some of the roads being asphalted are the five kilometers Oba-Ile Housing Estate which links two other Estates including Grace Land and Grace Garden with SIB, and the two kilometers Araromi to Don Bosco road in Akure.

Engr. Aminu, who noted that government is currently working on about 21 roads in the First Phase, assured that everybody will have a taste of good governance under the Governor Akeredolu administration.

He, however, urged the residents to take ownership of any government project in their areas and avoid actions that can cause damage on the roads.

The Commissioner explained that the Governor was able to continue his stride in infrastructure development because of his leadership qualities and uncommon passion for the development of the state.

He said:”A couple of months ago, we received several letters and complaints about bad portions of township roads, potholes, and failed sections within the town.

“We forwarded those letters and complaints to Mr Governor for approval after we have summarized the report and everything. And after our defence Mr Governor graciously approved it.

“Everybody knows government is working on infrastructure massively; we are constructing new roads, and despite that, we will not abandon the inherited ones because we have discovered that majority of our existing roads are bad.

“So, based on that, Mr Governor has graciously approved over 35 kilometers length of roads for maintenance as a Phase A. Oba-Ile Housing Estate road network which is about five kilometers is one of the roads. We are doing asphalt overlay now; they have done patching, maintenance and repair of drain. Few days ago they primed the surface.

“We are happy with what the contractor is doing and we are also happy with the good response from the residents. You can see they are appreciating what government is doing for them.

“Before now we promised to look into the road, and today you can see the level of completion and what the government is doing here.

“We also have other roads in the town. We started from Mother-and-Child road, Champion to Fanibi, Agagu road, Aule to Ilesa garage road, Araromi to Don Bosco, Araromi to Stadium. We are working on Adegbola-Ayedun to Leo too. And what we are doing is that we will maintain, patch and repair drains where necessary, and do complete overlay. So, we are giving new roads.

“With this, within the next couple of years there won’t be any maintenance because we discover that the lifespan of most of these roads has expired.

“So, we are working on about 21 roads as First Phase. After Araromi to Don Bosco, we are moving to Stadium and to Otenuro Avenue down to Edo Lodge, Iyeoma to Bishop’s Court, CBN quarters to Sijuade and a lot more.

“I want to use this medium to appreciate Mr Governor for his magnanimity. Despite paucity of funds he is still working massively on infrastructural projects. Even we, his lieutenants are amazed with what he is doing.

“Infrastructure is the bedrock of all development in the state. With this now, everybody is happy, the residents are happy and we thank God.” The Commissioner added.

Engr Aminu who was joined by a team of Engineers and top officials of the Ministry, assured that all the road projects will stand the test of time.

After supervising the asphalt overlay of about two kilometers Araromi road, Engr Aminu assured the poeple of the state of more life transforming projects across the state under Governor Akeredolu.

In separate remarks, some of the residents of Oba-Ile Housing Estate including Prince Kunle Ademeso and the Chairman, Grace Land Estate, Oba-Ile Olugbenga Popoola, expressed their gratitude to Governor Akeredolu for remembering them.

They promised to deliver massive votes for the APC come 2023 presidential polls because of what Governor Akeredolu led administration has done to alleviate their suffering.

Also at Araromi, some residents including Mrs Gbemisola Adelegan, Mr Jubril Yusuf, Mrs bosede Olawole, Tope Olaiya, said the good road will reduce constant damage on their vehicles and accidents that usually occur as a result of deplorable state of the road before government intervention.

According to them, the bad road has adversely affected the socio-economic activities in the areas until now.

I’ll Repeat Landslide Victory For Rivers PDP As Campaign Director-General – Bro Obuah

Director-General of the Peoples Democratic Party, Rivers State Campaign Council for 2023 general elections, Bro Felix Obuah says he is ever ready to repeat his winning streak by delivering all Rivers State PDP candidates in next year’s general elections.

Bro Obuah, the immediate past chairman of the State PDP under whose watch the party won the governorship election and other elections back to back in 2015 and 2019 respectively was speaking at the sidelines of the commissioning of the Rivers PDP Campaign Office and inauguration of the Campaign Council in Port Harcourt on Monday, October 24, 2022.

The former PDP boss said though the party is not going to leave anything to chances, the quality leadership of Governor Nyesom Wike exemplified by the infrastructural revolution across the State has already provided the elixir to the quest for the people’s mandate in favour of the tested Rivers State PDP in 2023 general elections.

Elections, Bro Obuah said, are not only the time to ask for votes but also the period to present one’s scorecards to the people for assessment.

“If this is the case, the landmarks of the PDP-led government in the State speak for the party. If the opposition has seen and testified to the quality leadership provided by His Excellency, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike over the years and decided to join him in this race, then the result is clear. All we are expected to do is to be on guard so that the lying spirits do not take advantage of the enthusiasm of our people and play a fast one on them.

“But I want to assure our party that victory is guaranteed. All we need to do is to continue to pray for our governor for health, courage and smooth handover of his vision for the state”, Bro Obuah stated.

Why NDDC failed under APC – Okowa

Delta Governor and Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, on Saturday said Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and other institutions of government failed under the All Progressives Congress (APC))-led Federal Government because they lacked knowledge of their mandate.

Okowa stated this in his remarks at the Edo State PDP Presidential Campaign held at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City.

He said that PDP made a great choice in Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate because of his knowledge of governance and challenges bedevilling the country.

Okowa stressed that NDDC and other government agencies failed to deliver on their mandate for the people due largely to ignorance and ineptitude.

According to him, the PDP has made a great choice for the people of the Niger Delta because Atiku Abubakar understands the problems in the region.

“He knows all the states in the Niger Delta and it was during his time as Vice President that the Niger Delta Development Commission was established.

“The NDDC was doing well but in the last seven years, we have not seen the hands of NDDC in our states because those who came in, the APC government, don’t know the purpose for which the NDDC was established.

“A lot of institutions that were established before the APC government came on board have not been put into effective use because the APC-led Federal Government don’t know how the institutions came about.

“The PDP government knows how to run the economy in such a manner that it will be good for all the youths and the women and for all Nigerians.

“Unfortunately, in the last seven and half years, our economy has been marred by hunger; it has been poverty and poverty and our people are unhappy and dying.

“We have brought a man, Atiku Abubakar, who we know is going to revive our economy and ensure that there is creation of more jobs so that our youths will be gainfully employed,” he said.

Okowa added that “one other good thing is that Atiku Abubakar is the only man that understands the issues of the states – that the states need more money, the states need more power.

“He has promised us that he is going to devolve more power and more resources to every state government and to the local governments.

“This is what we need to develop our states. He is the only presidential candidate who is sincere to this and he has been talking about it.”

He affirmed that the people of the South South and the Niger Delta believed in Atiku’s capacity to deliver good governance for the people.

“l want to plead that all our youths should go forth and start to convince all other youths that the new Nigeria that we need is a Nigeria that will create hope for you and this will happen when Atiku Abubakar is President.

“To God be the glory, he has chosen one of us, myself, a son of the South South as his running mate. I want to reassure you that l am one of you and together we will work to deliver a new Nigeria for our people,” he stated.

Addressing the mammoth crowd at the stadium, the Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar, pledged to partner the private sector in the provision of effective rail system in the country, if elected.

He outlined other specific areas of concern to include economic revival, adequate security, unity among Nigerians, devolution of power to states and local government councils, compulsory education, infrastructural transformation and other developmental challenges inhibiting the socio-economic growth of the nation.

He thanked the people of Edo for the massive votes given to the party in 2019 and charged them to redouble the feat in 2023 to enable them reap more dividends of democracy.

Abubakar reaffirmed that the PDP was on a rescue mission to address the monumental pains inflicted on Nigerians by the APC-led Federal Government from 2015.

Chairman of the occasion, Igwe Sir Benneth Izuchukwu Emeka, Okebo II of Umueri, commended Governor Okowa for his remarkable contributions to the development of Delta and assured of the support of Ndigbo towards his presidential aspiration.

The music video, the first from the ‘Chude Jideonwo Presents’ studio, is directed by Chude Jideonwo, and co-produced by Mfon Ekpo.

Okowa tasks religious leaders on mentorship

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta has charged Christian leaders and faithful in the country to bear good fruits that would draw men and women to God.

Okowa, who is the Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the call at the 30th anniversary of Heroes of Faith Ministries and 40 years in Ministry of Bishop Kingsley Enakirerhi held on Sunday at Ughelli.

He congratulated Bishop Enakirerhi on the spiritual and physical impact of the ministry, and affirmed that contribution of any church to the society was not in the church building but in the souls won for Christ.

He urged Church leaders to use their position to offer meaningful advice to public office holders to enable them perform better for societal development, stressing that any position one found himself in life was a platform to leave enviable legacies.

Remarking that studying God’s words often brought greater knowledge to Christians, the governor advised Christians to be deeply rooted in the gospel to enable them make greater exploits in the service of God.

He reminded the chief celebrant of the need to see the successes recorded by him as a call to do more for God and humanity.

“Today is double celebration in the life of Bishop Enakirerhi and I thank God for the lives he has ministered to for the last several years because that is what he will be remembered for on the last day.

“It’s not so long I got myself close to our Lord Bishop but he has become my very good friend and also a mentor in the Christian life. You know, when you are a Governor, not too many people talk very frankly with you.

“But, our Bishop speaks to me regularly and I thank God that in our conversation, I have learnt a lot. He is also someone who is also passionate about friendship.

“I believe that when fathers in the Lord get closer to the people in authority, there is a lot of impact it makes in the lives of people in authority.

“I want to urge our father in the Lord and other fathers like him to continue the good work because in drawing men closer to yourself, you help men to draw closer to God.

“I thank you for all that you have done for me as governor and the great strides you have made in the Pentecostal Fellowship in Delta State.

“When people are in positions of authority, it is important to leave a mark and God will forever rest His grace on you and your family for that which you are planting,” he said.

Okowa said that the celebration was for the growth of the church and the many souls lifted from the kingdom of darkness to light.

“We celebrate today because there is a success story. The success story is not in the buildings that I see but in the souls that have been brought to the church; brought out of darkness into light.

“I urge that you continue to work until the very last day. You are a very godly man and contented in all aspects of life and I urge everyone of us to emulate that live of contentment.

“Every child of God is supposed to be an epistle because your life and acts maybe that which will convert the next person to serve God. And when you do the wrong thing as a Christian, you may just be driving the next soul that would worship God.

“My lord Bishop, I want to thank you because your life has become a role model in Christendom and lot of people speak about it.

“As a Bishop, a lot of people will be looking at you to see if you would make mistakes, but when your life is real in service to Christ, you find that your congregation will emulate you and that will bring many more persons to God,” the governor stated.

Earlier in a sermon titled “Forget Not His Benefits,” the General Overseer of Heroes Of Faith Ministry, Bishop Kingsley Enakirerhi said he was appreciating God for keeping him in the faith for 40 years and 30th anniversary of the church.

Bishop Enakirerhi who is the Delta State Chairman, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), said no man should stay a day without appreciating God for the gift of life and achievements recorded.

According to him, any earthly blessing that does not positively impact on the lives of others and the society at large, was worthless hence the need to be a blessing to all.

High points of the service included presentation of award of excellence on Governor Okowa, ordination of some members of the church as clergymen and women as well as special thanksgiving for the anniversary.

…Other Lucky Participants Win 2-Bedroom Flat, Return Ticket To Turkey

A civil servant with the Lagos Island Local Government, Mrs. Adebisi Ikusawe has won a brand new GAC Sport Utility Vehicle at the just-concluded National Women’s Conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO).

This is coming six months after she was involved in an accident that completely damaged her car beyond repair.

In line with the tradition of COWLSO during the annual conference, three lucky participants usually win star prizes, while several others win prizes including deep freezers, flat screen televisions, water dispensers, washing machines, microwave ovens, blenders, toasters, among others.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the conference, Lagos State First Lady and Chairman of COWLSO, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu said the story of Ikusawe was one that elicited a deep emotional reaction, having won the star prize of a brand new car a few months after surviving a serious car accident.

“If you hear this woman (Ikusawe’s) story, in April 2022, she was involved in a serious accident. The car was a right off. As faith would have it, at the Gala Night at this conference, she got a brand new car,” the First Lady said.

You can’t become governor with lies, Delta tells Omo-Agege

Delta Government on Tuesday advised All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate in the state, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, to desist from telling lies to hoodwink unsuspecting Deltans into supporting his already failed ambition.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, at a news conference in Asaba said no amount of lies and propaganda deployed by the APC candidate would secure the governorship of the state for him and his failed party.

Aniagwu, who was with the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, stated that the state government would not fold its hands and allow Omo-Agege to use lies and bogus promises to deceive Deltans into voting APC in the general elections.

He said that Nigerians were still grappling with the lies told by the APC to come to power in 2015 and would not allow the Deputy President of the Senate to deceive Deltans into voting a party that lacked leadership and governance skills.

According to him, the attitude of Omo-Agege is becoming worrisome even when we have advised him before to tell Deltans what he would do for them because we acknowledge that it is his democratic right to seek the office he is aspiring to occupy in 2023.

Aniagwu, however, said that “in doing so, it will not be wise for him to take for granted the intelligence of Deltans, because the best way to speak to Deltans is to tell them the truth.

“You cannot ride to occupy the Government House on the altar of lies because governance these days cannot be carried out the way they thought it was done in the past.

“You will recall in 2015 that the APC rode on a mantra of change and unfortunately every element of that change has turned out to be total lies.

“You are all witnesses to the fact that none of the things promised has been fulfilled; so, to want to deploy same old trick of well-laced lies and make them look like the truth to aspire to become the Governor of Delta is not acceptable to our people.”

On allegations of borrowing by the state government, the commissioner said Omo-Agege lacked requisite knowledge and credibility to question Governor Okowa on borrowing as he jointly superintends over a National Assembly that was notorious for approving frivolous loans to President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC Federal Government.

“If we want to talk about professionals in borrowing you will be talking about the APC-led Federal Government where Omo-Agege sits as number two in the Red Chamber where several billions of dollars were approved arbitrarily and borrowed even when they have not translated to the life, welfare and well-being of our people as Nigerians.

“The funds that we sought before now, we made it very clear the reason why we wanted to take the bridging finance facility because we had monies owed to us by the Federal Government.

“In order to move against the tide by ensuring that the fluctuations that characterised our economy, particularly our currency, does not catch up with what we were expected to earn.

“As we speak, the Federal Government has not been able to remit what is supposed to come to us quarterly and on the basis of that we have not been able to access that loan.

“For all the loans we sought for we have always explained what we wanted to do with it and on this bridging finance we were very clear on the need for us tackle issues of pension and completion of some ongoing key projects,” he stated.

On another allegation that Okowa administration had no projects to show for the past seven years, Aniagwu slammed Omo-Agege for being economical with the truth.

He said there was peace in the state because the state government had taken development to hitherto abandoned oil-producing communities.

He challenged Omo-Agege to take a tour of communities in his local government, especially the Agbarho-Orherhe bridge and road, Arhagba-Orogun Township roads Ogbe-Ikolobie road, Imodje-Orogun road and the recently awarded Orogun bypass, all in his community.

“The Emevor-Orogun road recently approved by Exco is in the process of being awarded. Once in a while he flies into the Asaba Airport and he knows what we have done there; so, he cannot come and tell lies and think that will catapult him into the government house.

“Let him go and unfold his programmes because Deltans are very much informed for anyone to take them for a ride.

“Let him focus on his programmes and projects and if he must look at our direction let him stay on the path of facts becauss anybody who wants to govern Delta irrespective of political party must come with clean hands,” he stated.

On the successes recorded by Chief Government Ekpemupolo popularly known as Tompolo on oil theft, Aniagwu said it was a clear justification of the state government’s earlier position for the Federal Government to engage locals in the security of oil facilities and infrastructure.

Floods: SERAP gives Buhari 7 days to trace how trillions of ecological funds are spent

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to “direct the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, and appropriate anti-corruption agencies to promptly and thoroughly investigate the spending of Ecological Fund by governments at all levels—federal, state and local governments from 2001 to date.”

SERAP said, “Suspected perpetrators of corruption and mismanagement should face prosecution as appropriate, if there is sufficient admissible evidence, and any missing public funds should be fully recovered.”

SERAP’s letter followed reports that the ravaging flooding in some parts of the country has resulted in the loss of over 600 lives, displacement of more than a million persons, and destruction of properties worth billions. The most affected states include Anambra, Delta, Kogi, Rivers, Benue, Yobe, Cross River and Bayelsa.

In the open letter dated 22 October 2022 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “trillions of ecological funds have allegedly gone down the drain. The resulting human costs directly threaten human rights – rights to life and to a place to live – rights that your government has an obligation to protect.”

SERAP said, “Irrespective of the cause of a threat to human rights, your government still has positive obligations to use all the means within its disposal to uphold the human rights of those affected.”

SERAP also said, “Although ecological funds are shared across the three tiers of government, and emergency management agencies, the funds are managed and supervised by the Federal Government.”

The letter, read in part: “Your government has the legal obligations to hold all tiers of government and emergency management agencies to account, and to trace, find, and recover any missing ecological funds.”

“Your government has the legal obligations to address the calamitous consequences of flooding for the human rights of millions of people, and to prevent and address some of the direst consequences that climate change may reap on human rights, especially given the disproportionate impact on vulnerable people and communities.”

“Your government must use all means available to it to prevent and address the threats to human rights that result from climate change, and to provide access to effective remedies for victims when these rights are violated.”

“Your government has a positive obligation to protect individuals against the threat posed to human rights by climate change, regardless of the causes.”

“Your government also has legal obligations to effectively address the aftermath of the flooding such as deterioration in health, diminishing access to safe drinking water and susceptibility of the areas affected to disease.”

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider appropriate legal actions to compel your government to comply with our request in the public interest.”

“Climate change also has the potential to exacerbate existing threats to human rights in the country. Rising global temperatures will jeopardise many people’s livelihoods, increasing their vulnerability to poverty and social deprivation.”

“In order to uphold its constitutional and international human rights obligations, your government must respond to the impacts of the flooding, and of climate change generally.”

“According to the audit of the Ecological Fund Office carried out by the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, (NEITI), the total amount allocated and received by the fund from December 2011 to November 2016 was N277 billion.”

“The operations of the Fund from 2012 to 2016 reportedly showed that some of the disbursements were not utilised for the purpose for which it was established. During these periods, N74,170,932,645.20 was released to State Governments to solve ecological problems in their States.”

“Impunity for corruption in the management of Ecological Fund will continue as long as high-ranking public officials go largely unpunished for their alleged crimes. It is by pursuing these allegations and taking the evidence before the court that the truth will be revealed and justice best served.”

“SERAP is seriously concerned that years of allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the spending of Ecological Fund and entrenched impunity of perpetrators have undermined the ability of governments at all levels and emergency management agencies to prevent the impact of flooding on the human rights of socio-economically vulnerable Nigerians, and to effectively respond to the problem.”

“Allegations of corruption and mismanagement have undermined the ability of authorities at all levels to invest in drainage systems, and to tackle soil erosion and climate change challenges across several parts of the country.”

“SERAP also urges you to direct Mr Malami and appropriate anti-corruption agencies to urgently identify and ensure access to justice and effective remedies to affected victims.”

“SERAP also urges you to direct Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Federal Government to publish details of allocations from the Ecological Fund to the Federal Government, the 36 state governments, Abuja, the 774 local government areas of the country, and the National Emergency Management Agency, as well as state emergency management agencies between 2001 to date.”

“SERAP urges you to instruct the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to jointly track and monitor the spending of Ecological Fund by the 36 state governors, the 774 local government areas, as well as all emergency management agencies across the country funded through the Ecological Fund.”

“SERAP is concerned about reports that the funds released for ecological projects are characterised by mismanagement, diversion of funds, substandard and abandoned projects fully paid for. Ecological funds have also been allegedly spent for other purposes such as election campaigns and political patronage.”

“Prevention of corruption in the spending of Ecological Fund, and preventing and addressing the challenges caused by climate change are serious and legitimate public interests.”

“There is a legitimate public interest in ensuring justice and accountability for alleged corruption and mismanagement in the management of Ecological Fund.”

“Nigerians have the right to know how the public funds budgeted to address ecological challenges are spent. Publishing the details of allocations of Ecological Fund since 2001 would promote transparency, accountability, and reduce the risks of corruption in the spending of the funds.”

Ruling invalidating Rivers APC primaries won’t stand – Wenenda Wali

A member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from Rivers State, Kingsley Wenenda Wali, has expressed confidence that the judgement of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt nullifying all the primary elections conducted by Rivers APC will not survive the scrutiny of the superior courts.

Wali, who is equally the National Leader of Unity House Foundation (UHF), a good governance and peace advocacy group, said in a statement issued in reaction to the judgement, that the APC in the state saw it coming since after the proclamation of Executive Order 21 of Rivers government, disallowing political parties from using any public facilities for campaign rally without the payment of a non-refundable fee of N5 million.

He said the attempt to kick APC out of the race would not work as, according to him, it remains the leading opposition party embraced by Rivers people and poised for victory in the 2023 elections in the state.

The APC stalwart, a peace promoter, urged the party’s loyalists, members and supporters not to be worried but rather stay calm and focused in their quest for the installation of a government of the people under the stewardship of Pastor Tonye Cole of APC.

His statement reads: “We knew we will get here and we were prepared. After the promulgation of Executive Order 21, well-meaning people advised the APC to challenge this extremely political and self-serving order in court. My response has always been that the people who cooked up this cowardly but draconian order, know the final outcome of this challenge already, but they believed in the time it bought them. However, we hoped that bravery somehow will prevail. But we were also not too optimistic, so we prepared and that’s why we focused on the Boys Scout motto of BE PREPARED.

“Therefore, because we were prepared for the ruling by the Federal High Court. As members of the APC, we respect and value the place of the judiciary in our democracy. So, all APC members are always advised to remain civil and legal, irrespective of our disappointments. And this is why the APC immediately appealed the ruling cancelling the primaries conducted by the APC in Rivers State.

“I urge all members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State to remain calm, steadfast and focused. Because our course is just and fair, we certainly will prevail.

“WE KNOW THAT LIGHTENING SHALL NOT STRIKE TWICE.”

Delta bags US award for sustainable healthcare financing

Delta Government has been conferred with the United States Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (USCDC) Award for exemplary leadership in healthcare financing.

The award – Partnership for Sustainability Healthcare Financing (Budgeting, Release and Expenditure) was announced at the USCDC Biannual Program Performance Review Meeting/2022 End of Project Cycle Symposium held in Abuja.

Receiving the award at the Flag-off of 2022 State Integrated Measles Vaccine Campaign in Asaba on Wednesday, the State Governor, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, commended World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF), National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and other partners for collaborating with the state government to safeguard the health of children.

He said that the flag-off was a component strategy at sensitizing mothers and caregivers on the need to vaccinate their children and wards aged between nine months and 59 months with the measles vaccine, thus conferring immunity against the disease on the recipients.

Okowa said that Measles outbreak occurred when the child population immunity waned and a high proportion of the children in the communities were zero-dose for routine immunization.

“The objective is to increase population immunity, thereby reducing the risk of measles virus transmission and outbreak in our communities.

“This, in addition to poor community and environmental hygiene practices, are risk factors for the disease.

“It is one of the diseases of great public health importance, thus requiring enormous collective efforts of individuals, households, health workers and various community-based organizations to ensure its prevention, control and surveillance,” he said.

He restated that the State Government, through her policy of a clean environment and tackling floods, was constructing drainages across the landscape of the State.

“I call on Deltans to properly dispose of their refuse and not dump them in the drainages as this has serious health consequences for the communities, which apart from worsening the flood situation in those areas, nurture more breeding sites for disease vectors and vermin.

“I hereby admonish all of us to take responsibility for our personal and communal health while supporting government health initiatives, interventions and programmes to achieve optimal health in line with this administration’s determination to achieve Universal Health Coverage through the Stronger Delta Agenda,” he stated.

Okowa who is Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urged mothers to come out massively with their children aged nine to 59 months and get them vaccinated against the deadly measles disease irrespective of previous vaccination status at the various health facilities across the State.

Welcoming guests earlier, Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Mordi Ononye, said Measles was one of the vaccine- preventable diseases of childhood and accounts for a large proportion of child deafness, blindness and death among under-five children in Nigeria.

He said the vaccination would be implemented in two phases for effective supervisory support to skilled health workers participating in the exercise.

SANWO-OLU EXPANDS LAGOS FIRE RESCUE CAPABILITY, HANDS OVER THREE NEW FIRE STATIONS

  • Governor upgrades Alausa fire station, as Lagos raises fire depts to 21

Lagos State Government has recorded a major asset expansion in its emergency response services, with the inauguration of three newly built fire stations in the State.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, physically commissioned the new fire station in Ebute Elefun, while he virtually unveiled the other two fire stations built in Oniru and Ajegunle.

The projects were initiated to enhance the response time to disasters associated with fire and to bolster the capability of the State’s emergency management system.

The Governor, on the same day, commissioned the upgraded Fire Department headquarters in Alausa.

With the three additional assets, Lagos now has 21 fully equipped fire stations across the State.

The facility expansion programme was part of the recommendations that followed the 2020 comprehensive assessment carried out by the Lagos State Government in the emergency response department aimed at enhancing performance.

Sanwo-Olu said one of the challenges identified was the inadequate fire stations to efficiently manage fire outbreaks at a scale that would allow quicker response time and speed.

His administration’s response to the identified gaps in emergency services, the Governor said, was proactive and strategic for the development of a practical road map to address limitations and reposition the emergency agencies for optimum performance.

He said: “Today’s handing over of three newly constructed fire stations at Ebute Elefun, Oniru, Ajegunle and the newly upgraded Fire Service Headquarters in Alausa to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Agency is the fulfillment of our administration’s commitment to the protection of lives and property of our citizens.

“We believe response time to fire disasters is critical as it can make a lot of difference between life and death. The earlier the fire is attacked, the lesser the damage it will have on people and property. To enable fire responders to reduce the distance and overcome other unplanned encumbrances on the way to fire scenes, the idea of having at least one fire station in each of the 20 Local Government Areas of the State was conceived.

“Lagos requires protection through deliberate disaster mitigation and emergency management strategies that are realistic and comprehensive. We are convinced that the construction of new fire stations will allow quicker response to the scene of emergencies within their specific area of coverage, as we believe the proximity of fire stations to incident locations is crucial to rescue and safety operations. With the new facilities, firemen will get to the theatre of operations at record time.”

Sanwo-Olu said the new stations were part of the State’s investments in the safety and well-being of residents and businesses. The assets, he said, would help limit the discomfort suffered by residents and considerably reduce losses associated with fire outbreaks.

Before the end of the second quarter of next year, the Governor said his administration would add another three fire stations in Ijede, Kosofe and Ijegun.

He said the upgrade and rehabilitation of existing fire stations had been done to further consolidate the position of the Lagos Fire and Rescue Service Agency as a leading fire fighting outfit in the country.

Sanwo-Olu enjoined residents living around the new fire stations to take ownership of the assets and protect the facilities from vandalism.

“Our efforts have enthroned an operational environment that provides the necessary ambiance, comfort and support that will ensure optimal performance of our firemen. These interventions will further consolidate the position of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Agency as a leading fire fighting outfit in Nigeria,” the Governor said.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations, Mobolaji Ogunlende, said the facility expansion was part of the plans to strengthen security in Lagos.

He said the new stations were designed to have their dedicated sources of power and water supply, with modern facilities for the convenience of firefighters deployed to man the stations.

“With these investments the Sanwo-Olu administration has made in this sector, I am confident that Lagosians would have a new experience in fire and rescue operations,” Ogunlende said.

Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, said the new assets would raise the capacity of the agency in emergency operations, adding that Ebute Elefun station would serve more than 20,000 population on Lagos Island dotted by high-rise buildings.

General Manager of Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA), Nike Adekanbi, described the newly upgraded Fire Department headquarters in Alausa as “an edifice built to last”, noting that the building expanded to strengthen the administrative capacity of the agency.

She said the Sanwo-Olu administration revamped 14 fire stations, creating over 600 jobs in the process.

The new administrative building of the Lagos Fire Service now has 60 offices, with an expanded appliance bay, landscaping, perimeter fence and developed road network which was constructed by the Lagos State Public Works.

DELTA PDP CELEBRATES SUPREME COURT JUDGEMENT, SAYS ITS VICTORY FOR PDP FAMILY; PARTY NOW FULLY PREPARED TO WIN 2023 ELECTIONS

Delta State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has celebrated the Supreme Court judgement which confirmed Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, as the duly elected, substantive, and authentic Governorship candidate of the Party in the 2023 general elections.

The joyous mood of celebration was conveyed and contained in a statement by the State Publicity Secretary Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, who noted emphatically that the long-drawn litigation over the matter of the Party’s authentic Gubernatorial candidate had initially given the opposition false hope but with the judgement now delivered by the Supreme Court and the matter fully settled, the PDP is now much stronger and will be more united and formidable going into the 2023 elections.

Dr. Osuoza’s statement, which described the judgement as victory for the Delta PDP family and further appealed to all party faithful, especially Olorogun David Edevbie, to close ranks and march with full confidence and authority, into the Party’s campaigns, which has already commenced with vigour, reads: “The Delta State PDP heartily rejoices with all our faithful, loyal and committed members of the PDP family, as we celebrate the Supreme Court judgement, which finally confirmed Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, as our duly elected governorship candidate and party flagbearer, for the 2023 election.

“The litigation, which centred around the legal affirmation of our authentic Governorship candidate, had initially given fleeting but misplaced expectations to the fractured opposition APC, but their hopes have been comprehensively and completely dashed with the decisive judgement of the Supreme Court, which has now settled the matter once and for all.

“We congratulate all members of our great PDP Delta family over this massive judgement from the Supreme Court which has not only settled all doubts and disquiet in our party, but has most importantly, strengthened our position and resolve to embrace our campaigns with renewed energy and vigour, as we march towards victory in 2023.

“As we celebrate this very important landmark judgement which is a major family victory in the life of our party, we hereby appeal strongly and sincerely to all our members, especially Olorogun David Edevbie, to wholeheartedly embrace the Supreme Court’s decision, in our collective quest to build a most formidable campaign team that will not only decimate the opposition, but also deliver resounding landslide victories in all our elections, especially the Governorship poll.

“Now that the legal fireworks are over and done with, we call on all our loyal, committed, and unwavering party members, to come together as one big united family, sheath their swords and let bygones be bygones. Our ultimate goal now is to win the 2023 general elections in all positions and with everyone joining hands and all pulling in one definite, unwavering direction towards victory, we will be totally unbeatable and even more formidable, as the party of the people.

“Delta is PDP and PDP is Delta!!!

PDP! Power to the People!!

Delta PDP sympathises with Zik Gbemre’s dashed hope

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Delta State has said that it is full of sympathy for one Zik Gbemre over dashed hopes that has made him to become emotionally devastated, saddened, and depressed by the Supreme Court’s October 21, 2022 verdict that declared Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as the authentic governorship candidate of the party for the 2023 elections.

The PDP made the remark in a Press Release in response to a social media statement titled: “ON SHERIFF OBOREVWORI’S “PURCHASED” VICTORY AT THE SUPREME COURT – TYPICAL OF DELTA STATE PDP COURT CASES,” in which he took offence against the apex court’s declaration in favour of Rt. Hon. Oborevwori.

The statement signed by the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza said the author’s diatribe was uncalled for, especially as he displayed a no holds barred effrontery at disparaging the good and dispassionate work of the Supreme Court, which acquitted itself well as an unbiased umpire in a case involving children of one parent who disagreed over the issue of who should fly the PDP governorship flag in Delta State. It was such that both parties took advantage of the courts, which looked at the issues presented to it on merit and finally came out with the apex court’s verdict declaring Rt. Hon. Oborevwori’s emergence as the winner of the primary election as genuine, trustworthy, and valid.

It is against this background that Zik Gbemre’s attack on the judiciary for its final adjudication in the family quarrel between two political children is unwarranted, ill-mannered, vulgar, and disrespectful of the institution for the dispensation of justice that every right-thinking Nigerian holds in high esteem. This type can only emanate from an unrefined and awkward element that took caution to the wind to display idiocy and ungraceful conduct.

The apex court and final institution for adjudication has spoken, and the parties involved have expressed their acceptance of the verdict of the final arbiter, that even the erstwhile aggrieved has since congratulated the other and conveyed his acceptance of the verdict in an open statement. It is, therefore, crude of Zik Gbemre to want to cry more than the bereaved. It is the exhibition of bad manners for Zik Gbemre to state that “Any court judgement victory that was obviously influenced by these political actors of Delta State PDP, will never serve the overall interest of the people…” He stated again that “Truth be told, those celebrating are simply celebrating ‘A PURCHASED COURT VICTORY.’ A victory that we all know was never decided on the merits on ground. But rather, the decision was one that was heavily influenced with money,” adding uncouthly that: “It is sad that the integrity of the Nigerian judiciary has been so watered down. And can no longer be relied upon by the common man. Though, this is not strange in Delta, especially as it concerns the PDP-led Delta State Government.”

Delta PDP declares that no person in his sane mind will exhibit this type of shame in a sworn effort to disparage the institution of justice that the whole nation holds in high esteem. The judiciary is the arbiter in all matters brought before it. And it is to ensure thoroughness and give benefits of doubt in all cases that the courts have appellate segments and the Supreme Court being the final appellate court of justice. With the ones involved in the fray, each exhausting the chances before them in seeking justice, and the final arbiter coming out with its verdict, good sense informs that everyone should abide by the judgment and move on.

This is why the attitude of Zik Gbemre in seeking to disparage and cast aspersions on the integrity of the judiciary is unacceptable, depraved, immoral, and wicked. Delta PDP will not indulge this degenerate further by joining issues with him in the other matters of slanderous remarks on the personalities of PDP leaders in the State.

Zik Gbemre is roundly denounced for his ill-conceived vituperations against the judiciary and PDP leaders. We call on all PDP faithful and supporters to ignore him, come together now that the court has finally done its work. ‘Party is Supreme’ doctrine behooves on us all to fall in line now that the siege of litigations are over.

2023: OMO-AGEGE AND THE LIMITS OF POLITICS OF DELUSION

At the comedy skit purported to be the inauguration of his gubernatorial election campaign council, Delta All Progressives Congress, APC governorship candidate and Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, instead of concentrating on his hopelessly ephemeral gubernatorial ambition, perplexingly veered off script, having apparently lost track of his core subject matter and proceeded to quite incoherently, boast that his one-man show of a pretence to a political party, would ensure that Delta State Governor and Vice-Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator, Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa, will never become Vice-President of Nigeria.

According to Omo-Agege, Delta APC must work to truncate Governor Okowa’s ambition.

Indeed, while speaking as if he has now become the Almighty God, the one and only true Author and Finisher of our fate, Omo-Agege declared that Governor Okowa “can’t go anywhere.” He was clearly only talking about himself, unwittingly revealing his own political destiny, and inadvertently unveiling the one and only political future in store for him! It was indeed a case of those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad.

To imagine that the now internationally infamous one on let off by the technical discussion of the court as ‘Mace Runner’ and supposed ‘Obarisi’, who embarrassed the noble, ancient and illustrious Urhobo nation, by kneeling like a typical hustler and political hack at the Presidential Villa, would have the temerity to accuse Governor Okowa of betrayal, simply for accepting a Vice-Presidential nomination he neither asked nor lobbied for, but was handed to him by the PDP Presidential candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in recognition of his sterling performance and giant strides recorded throughout the length of his mercurial political career thus far in service to the good people of Delta State and the Nigerian nation.

Everyone knows that Governor Okowa was boldly at the vanguard of the call for a Southern Presidency and provided leadership and coordination in that regard when many people were reluctant to do so. Nevertheless, the Delta State Governor has always been a committed and loyal Party man, who has never once jumped ship, unlike Omo-Agege who has unabashedly and enthusiastically trafficked himself from PDP to ACN to Labour and then to APC!

Surely in a situation where the delegates of the party freely and democratically decided to pick Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s flagbearer in a transparent and internationally monitored primary, what was any truly astute and right-thinking politician who means well for the people and must continue to strive to protect their interest in any set of circumstances, supposed to do?

If confronted with a fait accompli and nevertheless, God miraculously opens the next best door by which you can still continue to look out for the best interest of the people, are you supposed to reject it? It is something called Grace, which apparently Omo-Agege and his APC underlings can never truly comprehend.

In any case, who is Omo-Agege to have the nerve to lecture anyone about betrayal? Is this not the same Omo-Agege, who in league with his handpicked houseboy of a State APC Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie (to borrow the words of the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Barr. Festus Keyamo, SAN), instructed Delta APC delegates to vote for Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, a Northerner, instead of for Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a Southerner, at the APC Presidential primary?

Does Omo-Agege think that people are not aware of what he perpetrated during the Presidential primary when Delta APC, the party supposedly coming to fight imaginary corruption in Delta State, was nevertheless allegedly collecting dollars from various Presidential aspirants, promising to vote for them, only to end up voting for Ahmad Lawan in the Eagle Square, Abuja?

Do these APC jokers think we are fools in Delta State? Did Omo-Agege vote for Bola Tinubu or for Ahmad Lawan? Does he think Tinubu, himself, does not know that he betrayed him, stabbed him in the back only to come congratulating him with a smile, after he had won, like Judas pretending to be a friend and betraying Jesus with a kiss? What moral justification has such a man of extremely questionable loyalty and shapeshifting fidelity, to cast aspersions on Governor Okowa, a man of proven and unrivaled consistency throughout the entirety of his epoch-making political career?

Like some delusional potentate who already sees himself in Government House, the one rescued by the court as ‘Mace Runner’ imperiously commanded the minions at the inauguration that: “as you vote for Omo-Agege to be your governor, don’t forget that we need our men in all positions.” What a way to refer to oneself? You currently have only one House of Assembly seat, you similarly have just one Federal House of Representatives seat, one of your Senators is now an ex-convict and you are daydreaming of clearing the whole of Delta State? Seriously, Omo-Agege might have made a successful career in standup comedy, after all!

Delving further into a cesspool of delusions, he said: “Here in Delta, 2023 is our turn, the decision has been taken and that is what I have come here today to tell you all.” Who took this most momentous decision and was it in a coven or where exactly? Or is it that Omo-Agege and those he kneels to in Abuja like a little schoolboy desperately begging for sweets, have already taken the very decision that Deltans and only Deltans are lawfully, constitutionally, and electorally entitled to take come 2023?

Omo-Agege can continue to delude himself that he is running against Governor Okowa who is not on the ballot for governorship, is already completing his incomparable tenure as Governor, became a Senator before him, is the incoming Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and will forever stand heads and shoulders above him.

Truth is, Omo-Agege is not even running against the PDP gubernatorial flagbearer and the incoming Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori. He may continue to deceive himself and the clueless political lightweights he has misguided into his village meeting of a political party but the person he is really running against is the man who singlehandedly, twice made him a Senator, Chief Great Ogboru of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA.

We are not in the least bothered but are quite happy to buy tickets for the cinema show featuring their impending ‘poto-poto’ fight as Omo-Agege vainly tries to split Ogboru’s votes in the collective opposition cache, while we simply remain in Government House and continue to build upon the astonishing feats and good work of the Okowa administration for the good people of Delta State, when the new Sheriff in town and incoming Governor Oborevwori takes over in 2023.

Of course, Senator Omo-Agege should be told that Delta State has since moved ahead away from him and is effectively in the hands of God and will only accept one who believes in and worships God, not an idol, and can only be ruled by one who knows and serves Jehovah, not one that worships an image made by hand.

ABAVO CHRONICLE ABEJUKOKO VANGUARD ABIA REPORTERS ABIA SUN ABIGBORODO SUN ABRAKA STATESMAN ABUJA ABUJA CHRONICLE

LEAVE A LEGACY THAT WILL BENEFIT OTHERS, PRESIDENT BUHARI URGES LEADERS

President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Abuja said leaders in the private and public sectors should be more mindful of their positions as “trustees of the people”, urging them to always work towards leaving a legacy that will be long remembered.

“I wish that leaders will arise and stand up to be counted among leaders who have distinguished themselves to do the right thing and leave their footprints on the sands of time,’’ he stated.

Speaking at the Nigeria Excellence Awards in Public Service (NEAPS) held at the Conference Centre in the State House, President Buhari commended the 44 recipients of the awards, which include former President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan.

“Today, I am happy to have the opportunity to recognize 44 persons and organizations who have distinguished themselves across many sectors of the government and indeed, the economy.

“I am particularly happy to recognize His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, my predecessor for his contribution to peacebuilding from the Niger-Delta region, which has snowballed into peace in the region and now, around the world. Since leaving office, he has deployed his rich experience to ensure peace in many parts of Africa and has led mediation talks in several parts of the globe.

“I want to also specially recognize Abdul Samad Rabiu, the Chairman of BUA International Limited for his interventions in Education through the BUA Foundation, the Abdul Samad Rabiu Africa Initiative (ASR Africa), and his personal philanthropic initiative. This initiative funds tertiary education institutions in Nigeria from its yearly $100million ASR Africa Fund for Social Development and Renewal. I am happy that five (5) Universities have so far benefited with many more to come,’’ he said.

The President urged public servants to make accountability and integrity their watchwords.

“I am equally elated to have some State Governors and my Ministers receive this award. This is to put on record that this award is born out of empirical evidence of performance and not politics. This award is a recognition of the giant strides you all have made towards the transformation of Nigeria and you have consistently put hard work and dedication at the center of your initiatives.

“Let me use this opportunity to say ‘Thank You’ for your contributions to the transformation of our country. This award is a validation of your approach, but much more as a motivation for you and other upcoming leaders to continue doing more towards the attainment of a better Nigeria in all sectors of the economy,’’ he added.

While thanking organizers of the event, The Best Strategic Media (TBS), led by Ms. Mariam Mohammed, a Publisher and Public Relations expert, for the continuous support of his administration, President Buhari said the initiative was commendable “for deploying one of the best indices to determine the level of performance of Public Officers.’’

“I know that Public Officers will be challenged to perform above board now that they know they are being monitored by the people,’’ the President noted.

President Buhari said he was delighted that the maiden edition of the Nigeria Excellence Awards in Public Service (NEAPS) was a private-sector initiative, organized by The Best Strategic Media in collaboration with the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to recognize excellent service delivery.

According to him:

“Public Service is a public trust where officers and even employees must be accountable to the people whom they should serve at all times with utmost responsibility, integrity, loyalty, and efficiency. They are expected to act with patriotism and think out of the box in order to solve the many problems facing the people they lead.

“At present, issues of corruption continue to affect the civil services in many countries, around the world. Several reasons for these issues still exist because of deeply rooted problems like nepotism, cronyism, political patronage as well as lack of transparency and accountability. These vices distract them from delivering on their mandate and aspirations.

“The unsystematic enforcement of law and institutional mechanisms for holding civil servants and public officials accountable for their actions will always lead to a negative impression to the citizens.”

In his remarks, the former President, Jonathan, who received an Award for Peace Building, thanked the President for always making out time to encourage initiatives that recognize the contributions of individuals and institutions to nation-building.

“On behalf of all those that have received awards, I wish to say a very big thank you to the President and organizers,’’ Jonathan said.

Describing the event as unique, the former President assured that the awards will serve as an impetus for more service to the nation and humanity.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, said the entire event was “purely a private sector driven initiative’’ that would be encouraged to become an annual event, based on acceptance.

The SGF said the award was a scorecard of the administration of President Buhari, and other leaders in the country, as it reflected different interests and political persuasions.

FUTURE OF NIGERIA SAFER IN OUR HANDS, PRESIDENT BUHARI DECLARES, AS TINUBU BEGINS CAMPAIGN, UNVEILS ACTION PLAN

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday in Abuja declared that despite the unfavourable circumstances of global economic downturns, the Covid-19 pandemic, and very low international oil prices resulting in low revenue, the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government has ”managed to make Nigeria stable,” laying a solid foundation for progressive growth.

The President also said in the seven years journey as a government, the party has every reason to be proud of its achievements amid the inherited systemic corruption and local challenges of insecurity.

The President, who stated this at the unveiling of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) and the Action Plan of the APC Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pledged to be at the forefront of electing the former Lagos State governor as his successor.

He said electing Tinubu would consolidate the achievements of his administration as the presidential candidate has the capacity, visionary leadership and track record to do more.

”It would be disastrous to allow a situation that will lead to the reversal of the progress our country has made. Let me add that I joyfully accept the position of the chairman of the campaign council we are unveiling today.

”Our candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is too well known for his capacity and can-do spirit. He stands tall in his track records as a democrat, a champion of the rule of law, a man at home in every part of our country, and a truly visionary leader. All you need to do is think of Lagos in 1999 and 2022!

”I, therefore, want to assure all party members and supporters of our government that I will be at the forefront of this campaign.

”This election is even more important than the election of 2015 that brought us into power. The cost of losing the gains our country has made is much more than the need to stop the haemorrhage that led to our coming together nearly nine years ago.

”I want to charge every member to put in all their efforts during the next four and half months of campaign to ensure we record a resounding victory in all our elections nationwide. The future of this country is safer in our hands, ” he said.

Highlighting the achievements of the APC-led administration, President Buhari noted that under his watch, Nigeria’s security personnel are better equipped and motivated.

He added that the exploits of the Nigerian Armed Forces in the battlefield have led to massive and successive operational successes in the quest to secure the country and provide adequate protection for lives and property of all citizens.

”The efforts of our men and women in the armed forces over the last years are beginning to yield positive outcomes. We are gradually taking back our country from foreign-inspired bandits, kidnappers, and terrorists in the northeast and northwest and other parts of our country.

”We are equally combating separatists, oil thieves and bandits in the southeast and south-south of the country

”Our administration remains committed to progressively eliminating all flashpoints of insecurity nationwide. We would triumph over the enemies of our country; in whatever forms and shapes they appear.”

President Buhari also scored his administration high on infrastructure, saying ”our commitment to stimulate our nation’s economy through massive infrastructural development has not been misplaced.”

”We are already seeing the unprecedented infrastructure across the country. The real impacts of our efforts will be felt more as the various projects are completed and put to use in the coming days.”

The President who described the APC President candidate as ”the Jagaban, my friend, partner, and brother,” said the occasion was important to him for two reasons.

”First, it is significant to note that this unveiling is the third by our Party. I have had the opportunity of unveiling two Action Plans. I had the privilege of presenting our party’s manifesto of Change in 2014.

”It was a manifesto that signposted our collective desire to arrest the directionless journey our country was headed under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The second time was in 2018 when I unveiled the Next Level agenda of our government.

”The second reason this occasion is significant is that we are having our first transition within our party where I am in the last year of my two-term mandate, and we have a new candidate to lead our party into another Presidential election.

”The events preceding our Presidential primaries and the conduct of the primaries were important milestones in the development of our internal democracy and party politics.

”I must congratulate the leadership of our party, other stakeholders, and the entire party members for the success of the exercise. We can say with confidence, that our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), is charting a steady course in our journey towards enthroning lasting democratic culture in our body polity.”

The President also thanked party officials in the National Executive Council, the Zonal, State, Senatorial, Local Government, and Ward executives for their unalloyed support to his administration and the great efforts and outstanding commitment to the cause of the party and democracy.

He urged them to be mindful of the importance of building a strong and purposeful political party, recounting that the project of pulling ”Nigeria back from the precipice in 2015 was made possible by putting together a formidable party peopled by many who have made a vow to work for a Nigeria we all can be proud of.”

President Buahri charged party members to uphold the supremacy of the party, operating within the guidelines as stipulated in their Constitution.

”It is worth reiterating the fact that we are stronger today only because we continue to support the Party.

”For us to develop an enduring democracy in our country, we must first subscribe to the supremacy of our Political Party.

”We must subject ourselves to the rules and learn to operate within the guidelines as stipulated in our Party’s Constitution.”

The President reiterated his congratulations to Asiwaju Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima, for the victory at the Primaries, commending the maturity and sportsmanship of other contestants.

He expressed delight that most of the aspirants transferred their structures, including campaign offices to the party’s candidate after the primaries, adding that this is a demonstration of the commitment of the party leaders and members to the cause of the party and democratic practices.

He challenged party members to see themselves as ”ambassadors of progressive principles and exemplify the best of us in their action and words.”

In his remarks, Tinubu declared:

”I seek to become the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria because I know the way. My experience and past performance have shown that it will be through collective effort and national endeavour that we join hands, cross the divides and achieve our vision. I ask you to join Senator Shettima and I on this journey.”

On his Agenda for Renewed Hope for Nigeria, the APC Presidential candidate said standing on the foundation emplaced by the current administration, his administration will among other things, build a Nigeria, especially for the youth, where sufficient jobs with decent wages create a better life.

He said his administration would export more and import less in order to earn more foreign exchange and strengthen the naira.

”We will deliver food security and affordability by continuing to prioritise agriculture and assist farmers and other players in the agricultural value chain through the enlightened agricultural policy that promotes productivity and guarantees robust income.

”We will modernise and expand public infrastructure to stimulate economic growth at an optimal rate. Generate, transmit and distribute affordable electricity to give our people the necessary power to drive their businesses and brighten their homes.

”Our national economy will grow, succeed and be respected. We will embolden and support young people and women to participate more in politics and governance, harnessing emerging sectors such as the digital economy, entertainment, tourism, sports to build today, for the Nigeria of tomorrow.”

Tinubu also promised to provide economic opportunities to people living with disability, the poor and vulnerable, saying ”we will build a Nigeria where no parent is compelled to send a child to bed hungry.”

He added that his administration will also make basic healthcare, education, and housing accessible and affordable for all.

On security, Tinubu promised to establish ”a bold and assertive policy that will create a strong yet adaptive national security architecture and action to obliterate terror, kidnapping, banditry, and other crimes from the face of our nation.”

National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Adamu, said the APC is set for self-succession in 2023 presidential and general elections, buoyed by ”the dint of hardwork, perseverance, discipline, good governance and far-reaching policies of the Buhari administration which has pulled back Nigeria from the brink and stabilised the country.”

PRESS STATEMENT

21st October, 2022

Dirt For Good: OMO educates students on plastic recycling across thirty schools

In a move to inspire a more responsible citizenry on sustainability practices, OMO, Africa’s biggest laundry brand, has launched an educational campaign across schools to engage and educate children on plastic recycling through its Dirt For Good campaign, a holistic approach towards reducing waste, promoting sustainability and creating better communities.

Dirt for Good is a 3-week programme focused on making children and youths a part of the solution towards addressing plastic waste and littering by sensitizing and encouraging the collection and recycling of plastic waste, and proper waste disposal practices with thirty schools to be engaged through this initiative across Lagos.

Speaking at an event in Karis Schools, a private educational institution in Magodo Phase 2, the Brand Manager, OMO, Chinonyerem Opara, emphasized the need to take urgent action on sustainability and climate change, stating that Nigerian children are the changemaker generation that can impact the future of their environment.

“Global studies have consistently shown the negative impacts of plastic waste on the environment”, said Chinonyerem Opara, Brand Manager, OMO. “For example, it can cause intestinal damage when ingested by fishes and turtles. These plastic bags, bottles and other objects flow into canals and water reservoirs and end up partially or completely clogging them. With the huge surge we are currently experiencing, addressing plastic waste and recycling is no longer a local issue, but a global concern for everyone”.

“The low level of recycling in Nigeria, which is less than 12%, and inadequate waste collection are a huge threat to plastic pollution management”, said Yemisi Lawal, Chief Operating Officer, Wecyclers. “An estimated 367 million tonnes of plastic were produced in 2020 alone – about 12 tonnes (12,000kg) of plastic waste produced every second that year. If we are to find a listing solution to waste pollution, it begins by influencing change across all communities, even with students”.

According to the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Nigeria generates about 32 million tonnes of waste per year, among the highest in Africa. Of the waste generated yearly, 2.5 million tonnes is plastic waste, most of which (70 percent) ends up in landfills, sewers, beaches and water bodies.

The Dirt For Good Campaign is lending a voice to the global concern on plastics and wastes in line with the brand purpose which is to ‘Power up the world’s changemakers to get Dirty For Good’ and encourage the young people to take action on these issues to make a change for the future.

SANWO-OLU REITERATES DEMAND FOR STATE POLICE

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday reiterated the demand for State Police in Nigeria, saying it will help governors to protect the life and property of their citizens, which they have sworn to, as well as ensure peace and tranquillity within their states.

Governor Sanwo-Olu reiterated the call for State Police when the Commissioners of Police Service Commission (PSC) led by the Acting Chairman, Justice Clara Ogunbiyi (rtd) paid him a courtesy visit at the Lagos House, Marina.

The Governor said his administration will continue to provide adequate first-class security for the entire local and foreign citizens within the state.

He said: “We reiterate and seek your cooperation on our collective agitation for a State Police. This is my view and the view of a lot of my colleagues and citizens that given the age of our democracy, policing at the community level is not only desirable, but it is also important and it is what should be done and what we require.

“We will continue to advocate for State Police. We have said that State Police is not in any form to retrench or reduce whatever the Nigerian Police is doing now. There would still be clear responsibility that would be federal in nature; they would still have direct responsibility and oversight to continue to address.

“We also know that if you look at the ratio of Policemen to our huge population, we are still far from what it should be. So, for us, it is really another level of employment generation; providing what we are sworn to do, which is the protection of life and property; ensuring there is peace and tranquillity within our State.

“We know it is a constitutional thing and we are pushing at various stakeholders’ levels but even at an administrative point of view, let the point be made that when you (the Commissioners of Police Service Commission) came to Lagos, these are our own views and reasons. It is not long overdue and everybody can do it at their own measure.

“We have a huge task to continue to provide adequate first-class security for our entire local and foreign citizens that are here in large numbers. The population is growing on a daily basis and we need to be proactive to be able to respond and be able to ensure that we don’t have space for criminal-minded people or people that have other intentions within our own territory.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who commended the work of the Lagos Police Command led by the State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, said his administration will continue to encourage the Police to do what is right at all times.

Speaking during the visit, Justice Ogunbiyi commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration on the issue of security, saying security is top-notch in Lagos State.

She said: “We can see that security is top notch in Lagos and there is a lot of safety here and we wish and desire that other states within the country will also emulate Lagos because of the security situation which is top notch. Lagos is a model of how to handle security situations.

“The Police are doing a good job in Lagos and they could also replicate in all other states and parts of the country. This is basically why we are here, to appreciate the governor and that he should continue with the good work.”

Justice Ogunbiyi said the Police Service Commission will ensure that Nigeria Police work within the ambit of the law and ensure that they are well looked after, adding that the Commission will make sure the community has confidence in the Police.

LAGOS WAS BANKRUPT IN 1999 BEFORE TINUBU REVIVED OUR ECONOMY – SANWO-OLU

…Urges Women To Vote APC Candidate In 2023

…74-year-old Woman Wins 2-Bedroom Flat, As COWLSO Conference Ends

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Thursday called on women to mobilise massively to elect the Presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as Nigeria’s President in 2023, recalling how he (Tinubu) revived the economy of the state from bankruptcy in 1999 as Governor.

Sanwo-Olu, who spoke at the closing ceremony of the 22nd National Women’s Conference of the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) held at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, said the way to build the nation of our collective dreams is for women to mobilise their husbands, cousins, and children to vote for Tinubu who has a track excellent excellence performance.

The Governor, who was represented by his. Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, said: “We are a nation of history and part of our problem as a nation is that we have forgotten our history; is that we have westernised ourselves; is that we have broken our developmental trend. How do we bring it back? We must bring it back by allowing people who have precedents to do the work. It is as simple as that.

“Look at how beautiful and impactful this conference had been. It is because everybody came together to work hard led by a very competent First Lady. So, if we want a nation our own children and grandchildren will be happier than us, it is time to vote for a man who has done it before.

“There are no two ways about it; we must look at what people have done and how they have done it. People forget that in 1999, Lagos State was bankrupt; this state does not have a single ambulance in 1999. Only seven percent of the roads in Lagos State were tarred in 1999. So, a lot has happened and the foundation was laid by the man Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“We are not being sentimental; we are just saying let us move our country forward. We belong in the nation of the disciplined and respected not just we go somewhere and they are saying Nigerians should move to one side. No! We are a very important people and the future of the black man in the world rests on Nigeria and we should not miss this opportunity.”

Also speaking, Borno State Governor, Prof Babagana Zulum called for deliberate actions against hurdles that stifle development of women and their participation in governance and development.

Zulum, who was represented by the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Borno State, Hauwa Abubakar, said: “These hurdles undermine women’s ability to fully contribute to societal development which is exacerbated by poverty and lack of skills and formal education in our communities.

“We must strive hard to improve the situation of young women in Lagos and Nigeria by collaborating with well-meaning individuals, groups and organisations. We must, therefore, recognise community leadership and civic engagement skills as essential tools that will enable young women to participate in governance and development.

“There is need for collective action by men, women and youths in addressing existing barriers. This can generate more innovative and effective outcomes.”

In her remarks, Lagos State First Lady and COWLSO Chairman, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu said with the high-level participation of political and economic leaders and women from across the country as well as the quality of contributions during the interactive sessions at the conference, she was confident that the discussions would elevate the status of women to spring forth and stand out in all spheres of life in line with the theme.

She also urged the Federal Government to address Nigeria’s porous borders and other security challenges, just as she said women have a key role to play in tackling insecurity in the country.

“As women, it is time for us to lend our voice to the security issues in our country and not leave it only for the men to ensure that every one is security conscious. When you see something, say something and do something.

“From discussions at the Conference, we were told that we have over 261 borders, out of which 137 are porous. To the wives of security personnel attending this conference, it is time to put the word out there and pass across the message to our spouses to ensure that this country is safe; to ensure that poverty is eradicated. It is only when poverty is eradicated; it is only when there is security that people would want to come to Nigeria and invest.

“Every woman here is a stakeholders with regards to security. Our voice is what we have and we must use it constructively; to brainstorm, to speak out, and to stand out.”

She also urged women to embrace forward thinking mindset, saying: “Henceforth, our women in Nigeria must be forward thinking and unite to move forward.”

At the ceremony, a posthumous award was presented to the late South-West APC Women Leader, Chief (Mrs) Kemi Nelson. Other award recipients were the Wife of the First civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaja Abimbola Jakande, and media personality, Funmi Iyanda.

Earlier at the Gala Night, several interesting prizes were won, while three lucky participants won the star prizes.

They were: Mrs. Abiola Liadi, a retired Permanent Secretary in the Lagos State Civil Service, who won a Turkish Return Ticket;  Mrs. Adebisi Ikusawe, a civil servant with the Lagos Island Local Government, who won a brand new GAC Sport Utility Vehicle; and a 74-year-old Alhaja Olushola Oyedele a.k.a Iya Luku Mushin, who won a two-bedroom apartment at LagosHoms, Sangotedo.

PRESIDENT BUHARI RESTATES COMMITMENT TO PARTNERSHIP WITH GERMANY, SIEMENS TO IMPROVE ELECTRICITY GENERATION

  • WELCOMES TRAINING OF 5,000 NIGERIAN ENGINEERS UNDER PPI

Nigeria remains dedicated to the partnership with Siemens and the German Government to improve electricity generation in the country, President Muhammadu Buhari pledged on Thursday in Abuja.

Receiving officials of Siemens Energy AG at State House, the President urged them not to relent in ensuring that government’s commitment to Nigerians in delivering the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) is fulfilled.

The President told the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Siemens Energy, Dr. Christian Bruch, the CEO of Siemens Africa, Nadia Haakansson, and the CEO of Siemens Nigeria, Mr. Seun Suleiman, that the outcome of the collaboration will deliver critical business enablers and opportunities to engage young enterprising Nigerians in various endeavours.

The President also welcomed the training of 200 Nigerian engineers on network development studies under the initiative, saying that this represents ”a very important upskilling and knowledge transfer process.”

The President added that he looks forward to the 5,000 engineers that would have been trained by the end of the programme.

Recounting his promise to Nigerians earlier in this administration to improve electricity supply by resolving capacity deficit across the sector’s value chain, the President lauded the German Government, through the former Chancellor, Angela Merkel, for graciously supporting the country, leading to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Siemens.

He also thanked Chancellor Olaf Scholz for the German Government’s continued support for the PPI.

”A plan to deliver capacity improvements of 2,000 Megawatts in the transmission-distribution interface is now firmly the focus of PPI Phase I.

”In April 2022, the Honourable Minister of Power briefed me on the outcome of his visit to Germany where he held meetings with Siemens executives.

”That visit was fruitful in emphasizing the need to expedite delivery of the pilot PPI project, elements of which have started arriving in the country.

”The Honourable Minister also mentioned that you, Dr. Bruch, will pay a visit to Nigeria, and we are glad that you are with us today.

”The PPI remains a priority project for our Administration and Nigerians believe in the value that the Siemens’ brand can deliver.

”On our part, nothing is spared to ensure we improve the lives and livelihoods of our citizens,” he said.

President Buhari expressed delight at some notable progress on the implementation arrangements of the PPI, adding that the first batch of two power transformers already delivered by Siemens would be commissioned in November 2022.

”I have been reliably assured that 10 Power Transformers and 10 Mobile Substations would have been completely delivered and installed by May 2023.

”This is in spite of production challenges and constraints due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has severely impacted global production and supply chain.”

The Nigerian leader thanked the Government of Germany for approving Euler Hermes to provide cover for the financing of the PPI pilot project, noting that this will serve as a template for the subsequent phases.

Acknowledging that the overall frameworks for technical and commercial arrangements are being concluded, the President said:

”However, what I would like to see is that we attain completion of the entire transaction process by December 2022. This will entrench the mandate of the PPI in full committal terms.”

The Minister of Power, Engr Abubakar Aliyu, thanked the President for ”the remarkable vision of PPI, adding that Nigerians will be thankful to him for a long time after leaving office, “because the power sector will be revitalized.”

He said Siemens was one of the world’s best in power, ”and will surely deliver.”

Dr Christian Bruch, after sympathizing with Nigerians affected by the current devastating flood, said his team was fully committed to the PPI, ”and we will push forward in the weeks and months ahead, as we need to move the process faster.”

He also promised to continue with trainings and improvement of capacities, adding that though general elections were ahead in Nigeria, ”the power initiative will continue, as we are fully committed, and will accelerate the process.”

SANWO-OLU COMMISSIONS 150-CLASSROOM BLOCKS, HOSTELS IN 15 LAGOS SCHOOLS

  • 362,730 pupils benefit from Governor’s school infrastructure scheme

Education in Lagos State witnessed another remarkable moment of infrastructure expansion, with the addition of newly built 150 blocks of classrooms and 1,386-bed hostels to 15 existing schools across the six education districts in the State.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, unveiled the iconic school projects and virtually commissioned them at a physical event organised by the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS) in Agidingbi, Alausa.

The virtual commissioning was conducted in order not to disrupt academic activities at the beneficiary schools.

The projects were designed with the signature features of New School Design introduced by the Sanwo-Olu administration. Other facilities inaugurated by the Governor included composite furniture, lavatories and laundromats.

The projects were developed and delivered by SCRPS set up in 2019 by the Governor for the revamp of public schools and reduction of classroom deficit across the State.

The commissioning coincided with the unveiling of compendium of school infrastructural transformation carried out by the Committee since inception. Adding the new projects, SCRPS has successfully completed a total of 1,047 freshly-constructed and fully-furnished classroom buildings across public schools across the six education districts.

Inaugurating the school projects, Sanwo-Olu said his administration’s commitment to scale up access to education at all education levels was not in doubt, stressing that the State had committed more investment to Education and Technology in line with the cardinal objectives stipulated in the THEMES Agenda of his Government.

The Governor said his focus was predicated on complementary interventions in provision of physical infrastructure, technology, capacity building, teacher and student welfare, and reduction of the number of out-of-school children in the State.

He said: “When we came on board, one of the things we decided to do in building on the legacy of my predecessors in education was to inaugurate a Special Committee on the Rehabilitation of Public Schools in Lagos State (SCRPS) in November 2019, with a mandate to accelerate and actualise the core vision of revamping schools’ infrastructure in our State.

“Since its inauguration of SCRPS, we have started and completed several new building projects, including classrooms, hostels, security infrastructure like fencing and gate-houses, among others, and supplied new furniture for students and teachers. We have also embarked on several rehabilitation projects leading to the completion of rehabilitation projects in 197 schools.

“With the complementary activities of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance and Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA) and Ministry of Education, we have successfully delivered a total of about 2,280 classrooms so far, with associated sanitary facilities, potable water systems, and security infrastructure.”

Sanwo-Olu said no part of the State was left out of the interventions injected in education, maintaining his administration’s determination to ensure equitable distribution of the dividends of good governance to all divisions in Lagos.

The Governor urged communities yet to benefit from the scheme to be patient, noting that the Committee would not carry out rehabilitation projects at once and cover every school in the State within limited period of time, but he assured that his Government would continue to expand the scale of its interventions.

He asked the beneficiaries to make good use of the facilities provided and shun any form of vandalism that may render the Government’s effort useless.

Sanwo-Olu said: “We are working very hard to make sure as many schools as possible benefit from this intervention. We cannot do everything at once and cannot cover every school in the State within a limited period of time, but rest assured we will continue to expand the scale of our interventions. I ask for the patience and understanding of those schools that are yet to benefit.

“From the schools that have benefited from this rehabilitation programme, I ask that you use these facilities judiciously and responsibly. Shun all forms of vandalism and carelessness; treat these buildings and projects as public goods that must be maintained for future generations. I have no doubt that Lagosians will be proud to see what has been done, in terms of an infrastructure revolution in Lagos public education.”

Chairman of SCRPS, Hakeem Smith, said the Committee, in the last three years, had been strategic in rolling out the programme objectives under the guidance of the Governor and had achieved significant mileage in revamping decrepit schools’ infrastructure and reducing classroom deficits.

Smith said SCRPS employed the model of constructing and furnishing one block of classroom daily since inception, which translated to 52,350 students being properly seated in a standard and conducive environment.

“We have rehabilitated 197 schools, translates to over 2,280 classrooms with associated toilets and building up new fence walls where required. We have built 1,584-bed new hostels and improved facilities for students in model colleges with complimentary laundromat and reading areas. Our intervention has led to the provision of 181,365 school furniture and this translates to 362,730 students being provided with comfortable seats to learn,” SCRPS boss said.

The beneficiaries schools are Lagos State Junior Model College, Meiran, Lagos State Baptist Secondary School, Orile-Agege, Abesan Senior High School, Alimosho, Orisunbare Senior High School, Alimosho, Luwasa Senior High School, Ijede, Lagos State Girls Junior Model College Agunfoye (Ikorodu) and Ojota Junior Secondary School, Ojota.

Others are Eva Adelaja Junior Secondary School, Bariga, Muslim Junior College, Oworoshoki, Lagos State Model College, Badore, Lagos State Model College, Agbowa (Epe), Araromi-Ilogbo Junior Secondary School, Oko-Afo, Badagry Junior Grammar School, Badagry, Ajumoni Junior Grammar School, Daleko, Mushin, and St. Joseph Secondary School, Mushin.

SANWO-OLU: GIVE MEDIA PRACTITIONERS PRIVILEGES, RIGHTS TO DO THEIR JOBS WITHOUT HINDRANCES

  • Governor to unveil NMMA Alumni Association in November

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has described media as one of the real engines of growth and a real barometer that gauges the mood of the nation and helps to stabilise the polity of any sovereign country.

He said press freedom is an important ingredient of any civilized democracy, noting that media practitioners in Nigeria should be given the rights and privileges to do their jobs without any hindrances.

Governor Sanwo-Olu spoke during a courtesy visit by the Board of Trustees of Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA) led by its Chairman, Dr. Haroun Adamu, at the Lagos House Marina, on Tuesday.

The Governor who commended the role of the media in Nigeria said media practitioners should be recognised and encouraged to continue to perform their roles in society.

He said: “Press Freedom is an important ingredient of any civilized democracy. The profession is noble and very sacred. It must also be given the rights and privileges to do its job. People must be able to continue to know that there is somebody that would be the voice for the voiceless. Media practitioners should continue to deploy their skills and intellect to check people in authority, speak truth to power and use their training and intellect to direct leadership to ensure that we are not in a banana republic.

“Personally, I see the media profession as one of the real engines of growth. I see them as a real barometer that gauges the mood of the nation and helps to stabilise the polity of any sovereign nation. I am sure Nigeria is not an exemption. You can see and measure where the country is based on what the media is saying. And if people have donated their time and intellect to be the voice for the voiceless, I think it is proper that such people should be recognised and be encouraged to continue to do that.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who praised the NMMA for appreciating media practitioners and their works in Nigeria, assured the organisation that Lagos State government will support the 30th anniversary of the award.

“I am happy that you have been able to explain to us that over the years Lagos and its citizens and businesses have played major roles and so we feel highly honoured and encouraged that a landmark celebration; 30th anniversary would be taking place in Lagos. We will not shy away from supporting the anniversary because that is something that is proper.

“On behalf of my entire team, we want to congratulate you for continuing to hold the space high and for continuing to ensure that you are identifying and encouraging men that have kept the profession. We also commend you for using the merit award as a proper yardstick to encourage others to continue to do what is right at all times and to continue to give proper and fair reportage because there is a body that is looking at them,” he said.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Nigeria Media Merit Award, Dr. Haroun Adamu, said the choice of Lagos to celebrate 30 years anniversary of the awards in November is not accidental, noting that “Lagos is the birth place of Nigeria’s struggle for press freedom from which all other freedoms emanate.

He said Governor Sanwo-Olu during the 30th anniversary of the NMMA will unveil the Nigeria Media Merit Award Alumni Association, which comprised over 1,000 past winners in the print and electronic media categories on NMMA in the last 30 years.

Adamu said NMMA has become a cornerstone that has continued to promote the values and ideals of journalism in Nigeria, as well as freedom of speech.

Dettol, FG Commemorate 2022 Global Hand washing Day.

Leveraging its position as a foremost advocate of hand hygiene habits and regular handwashing, Dettol Nigeria has once again partnered with the Federal Ministry of Water Resources to commemorate the 2022 Global Handwashing Day. The event, which served as further emphasis on Dettol’s dedication to advance the cause of enhanced hand hygiene as a tool to decrease hygiene-related diseases held on the 17th of October 2022 in Abuja.

Expressing his belief in the theme “Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene”, the Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Sulaimon Hussein Adamu, Represented by Director, Mrs. Elizabeth Ugoh , while commending the stakeholders for their support, said, “Through this celebration, we are further raising awareness on the importance of handwashing with soap as a fundamental action of hygiene for our well-being — in line with the objectives of the United Nations General Assembly.”

“Though hygiene is a critical element of an integrated approach to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) service delivery, an estimated 2.3billion people globally and 171 million Nigerians do not have access to hygiene services. In Nigeria, only 13% of the rural population has access as against 25% of the urban population, while the wealthiest households are about four times more likely to have basic handwashing services compared to the poorest households.”

“The theme for this year’s celebration, ‘Unite for Universal Hand Hygiene’, is therefore, a call to action to build on the progress made from previous years by uniting to ensure hand hygiene access and practice for everyone, everywhere. On the part of government, there has been increased prioritization of hygiene programming and deployment of needed resources. I would also like to particularly appreciate the contribution of our partners for their financial and technical support, in the promotion of sanitation and hygiene, through programmes and activities aimed towards the attainment of the SDG Goal 6 for water and sanitation.”

Commenting on Dettol’s commitment to the importance of the international advocacy day, the Marketing Director, Reckitt Sub-Saharan Africa, Mr. Tanzim Rezwan, stated, “The purpose of the annual Global Handwashing Daay, which promotes handwashing with soap as an essential step in illness prevention, is to raise public awareness of the necessity of hand hygiene across the globe. With Dettol, we have made this vision more than a one-day activity and are devoted to seeing Nigerians inculcate a handwashing lifestyle as reports have stated that diarrhea prevention focused on safe water, improved hygiene and sanitation is not only possible, but cost effective.

He further asserted that “With our veritable cache of initiatives such as the Dettol Clean Naija Initiative, the introduction of the Hygiene Quest Curriculum, and recent partnership with Wellbeing Foundation Africa, we are well on our way to fulfilling our vision of impacting 6 million children with healthy hygiene and handwashing habits by 2025.”

Over the past 8 years, Reckitt Nigeria has, through the Dettol brand, become a hub of inspirational public health campaigns aimed at revolutionising the hygiene habits of Nigerians of all ages and gender. Through the School Hygiene Quest Program and New Mum’s Program, Dettol has furthermore begun to build new hygiene habits in children of all ages at various educational levels.

PDP SHOULD APOLOGISE IF ATIKU’S COMMENTS ON NORTHERNISING PRESIDENCY IS TRUE-WIKE

*Insists Ayu Didn’t Inform NWC, Govs, About N1.1B He Received

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has expressed mixed feelings over comments credited to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar that what the north needs is a northerner, not an Igbo or a Yoruba person as next president of Nigeria.

Such statement, if true, Governor Wike said, is a threat to the unity of Nigeria at a time when efforts should be concerted in giving every Nigerian a sense of belonging.

Governor Wike spoke on Monday at the international wing of the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa in Ikwerre Local Government Area, shortly on arrival from Spain. Governor Wike, was accompanied by the governors, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Samuel Ortom (Benue).

“I don’t believe that my candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could make such statement. But assuming he did make that statement, and this is one of the things we have been saying, this country needs to be united and part of the way you unite it is to include everybody.”

Governor Wike expressed his stances against anything that relegates any section of Nigeria and treat them as second fiddles.

The Rivers State governor is of the thinking that the handlers of Alhaji Atiku should also share in the blame for allowing their principal to make such comment in public which is capable of heightening tension and deepening the feeling of alienation among Nigerians.

“That has now confirmed to me one of the reasons why those of them in their camp, do not want Ayu to resign because they do not want inclusivity.

“I don’t know how those who are packaging the presidential candidate will allow him to make such statement. I was reading where somebody was saying that it was a direct response to a question he was asked.”

Given that the statement is now in the public domain, Governor Wike advised the leadership of PDP to tender apology to Nigerians while explaining the circumstances in which the statement was made.

“Be that as it may, I don’t think that it was necessary at this time, as people who are going in for election, as people who want Nigerians to trust them to have allowed such a statement to be made. “If it (statement) was made, as they said, I think, as a party, we need to apologize to Nigerians, assuming the (statement) was made.

“People are denying that it was made but if you watch the video, it appears true but people are saying with recent technology, anything can be done.

“This requires further explanation by our party, because Nigerians, as it is today, we can’t go this way if we want this country to remain as the way our finding father’s struggled, laboured, and toiled all the night to see that there is a country called Nigeria.”

Speaking further, Governor Wike took a swipe at the PDP national chairman, Senator Iyorciha Ayu, saying going by his responses to the allegations levelled against him, he stands indicted except proven otherwise.

“Luckily for me, he (Ayu) has now mentioned that he went to the presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Waziri of Adamawa where they discussed on the issues of borrowing.

“Now, the question is, when you talk about borrowing, who approves borrowing? You must go to the National Working Committee (NWC) to say you want to borrow money.

“I challenge him to bring the records where NWC approved that the party should go and borrow N1billion. What is the collateral?”

Governor Wike explained that in matters of funding the party, the governors had been up to that responsibility dutifully. According to him, it was therefore unthinkable that the national chairman would, in the guise of seeking funding for the party, opt to collect loan on behalf of the party without notifying the NWC and governors.

“Be sincere, how can you talk of N1 billion loan without the NWC mooting the idea, without the governors knowing. Then you talk about the N100million (One Hundred Million Naira) he said he told the Board of Trustees (BOT).

“If any governor gives you One Hundred Million Naira in order to rebuild one of the structures of the party, the Democratic Institute, let him show the minutes of the NWC where he said a governor has contributed N100million. Let him show the account to reflect this N100million.

“Let him also say that the N100m was in Naira or in Dollars. He said he gave it to the treasurer. I thought he would have told the world that NWC was aware.

Governor Wike stated for emphasis that his allegations against Ayu were categorical and it was expected that his responses should address each of the issues separately.

“In fact, the normal thing is that when once any governor or any party person has donated money to the party, you will go and tell NWC that so and so person has donated money. Let him (Ayu) show us the account where this money was paid into.

“Coming out to do a general denial is not denial. You (Ayu) must deny specifically to the allegations that were made.”

Governor Wike also wants Ayu to mention names of those he has contacted to handle the rehabilitation works going on at the PDP Democratic Institute and at the National Secretariat, Wadata Plaza, Wuse Zone in Abuja.

“Ask him, the contracts that are going on in this Democratic Institute and that of Wadata, who is doing that contract, is it not one of his sons?

“As a party, we believe that Nigerians must trust us. We must show leadership and part of that leadership is integrity. You don’t just come and deceive Nigerians that you did not collect one billion naira.

“So, let Ayu come out and tell us, tell the PDP people and tell the public that this matter was discussed in NWC.”

Governor Wike also described as out of order the PDP Board of Trustees resolution that mandated Ayu to make commitment that he would resign after the 2023 elections.

The governor wondered why the BOT could not make Ayu to fulfil his initial commitment that he would resign if a northerner emerges as presidential candidate from the PDP convention.

“To say he should make another commitment that he will resign after the elections, for me, BOT resolution is ridiculous.”
