We are going to make sure Okpebholo is elected governor – Edo elders

Edo elders on Tuesday outlined some of the key priorities of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
‘’We need a governor who cares about public education, health and environment. We need a governor who cares about women, youths and elderly. Senator Monday Okpebholo understands Edo voters’ economic struggles and will work every day to make our state a better place to live. We are going to make sure that he is elected governor. We shall make the APC governorship candidate to succeed. This is the project of Edo people. God willing, we shall succeed”.
They also described Okpebholo as the soul of a new Edo State.
‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo has vowed to serve the good people of Edo State faithfully and diligently. Thus, a vote for APC is a vote for transparency, accountability, due process, prudent management of scarce resources and development’’
The elders in a statement shortly after meeting in Benin City urged the electorate to reject political extremism, unremarkable politicians, brutal dictatorship and administrative incompetence.
“Senator Monday Okpebholo’s vision is virtually limitless. He will build structures for real, concrete development, translate our hopes to viable reality, fight for honest, transparent government, protect the interest of Edo people, build the infrastructure base of the state, appoint people from the three senatorial zones into key positions, create an enabling environment for businesses to flourish without official policy impediments and protect the wealth of the people in all parts of the state”
The statement issued by the Chairman of Edo Elders Forum (EEF), Chief Efua Abudu accused the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) of failing to improve the state.
‘’Edo State needs a visionary leader, who can think out of the box, come up with solutions that will address the paucity of development in the state. Senator Monday Okpebholo has what it takes in terms of exposure, education and vision to take Edo State to the next level of development’’
Okpebholo joined the gubernatorial race to bring in the much-needed investment to develop the state, harness the huge resources, shore up revenue and fill the gap in infrastructure. He is favored to defeat Ighodalo and Akpata.
‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo is committed to building a state where there would be economic buoyancy, a hub of modern development and beehive of business investments and employment generation activities. He will create new jobs, ensure proper training and enabling environment for the civil servants in the state, lead an all-inclusive government, bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, provide developmental initiatives and encourage women by reserving forty percent of appointment for them’’
Family rolls out burial activities for Wilson Santa Ebireri

A notable family in the Niger Delta on Tuesday described the death of business magnate, Wilson Ebireri, as sad and painful.
Santa, as his friends and classmates, called him died early hours of Friday, July 12, just five months short of his 71st birthday.
The family of Ebireri in a statement Monday morning highlighted the late business man’s sense of humour, extraordinary intelligence and awesome memory.
‘’We are already feeling the exit of Wilson Santa Ebireri but our consolation is that he lived a good life and left many things to gleam from – all for the betterment of the family’’
The statement released in Sapele by Henry Ovie Ebireri underscored late Wilson Ebireri’s hobbies in reading, music, football and movie.
It described Wilson Ebireri as a rare gem, a visionary leader and defender of family values.
The statement urged the younger generation to take a cue from the ideals that Wilson Ebireri lived for- building a united family.
“As a family head, Wilson Santa Ebireri demonstrated exceptional administrative prowess. The good people of Sapele will certainly miss him. We will certainly miss this quiet and unassuming man on so many fronts” the statement said.

PDP Hails Supreme Court Judgement Affirming Governor Diri’s Election
August 23, 2024
Press Statement

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) congratulates the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri over the judgement of the Supreme Court, which today affirmed his victory in the November 11, 2023 governorship election in the State.
The verdict of the Supreme Court is another victory for Democracy, Rule of Law and the expressed Will of the people of Bayelsa State in their quest for good governance and development on the platform of the PDP.
Governor Diri’s re-election by the overwhelming majority of the people of Bayelsa State is a resounding testament in recognition and appreciation of his outstanding achievements in the delivery of life-changing citizen empowerment programmes and projects in the State.
The PDP however raises serious concerns on the decision of the Supreme Court to uphold the governorship elections in Imo and Kogi States despite confirmed reports and evidence that the elections were heavily flawed and blatantly compromised, marred by widespread violence and manipulations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in connivance with certain unscrupulous officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The general melancholic disposition in Imo and Kogi States at the news of the judgment validates the concerns and views of our Party and majority of Nigerians that the results of the elections declared in the two States did not reflect the true aspiration of the people as expressed in their votes.
The upholding of the governorship election in Imo and Kogi States further underscores a very serious challenge created by the blemished operation and violation of the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022 and Electoral Guidelines by INEC.
The judgement also underlines the clamour and demand by our Party and Nigerians for a comprehensive review of the Electoral Law particularly with respect to the declaration of results of election without due regard to issues and complaints arising from obvious violation of the provisions of the law and electoral processes.
This again highlights the need to strengthen the electoral law and processes to ensure that elections are determined by votes cast and not by violence and manipulations as were prevalent in the Imo and Kogi State governorship elections.
Such situation places a lot of pressure on the judiciary which would have been avoided if the Electoral Commission ensured strict adherence to the Electoral Act and Guidelines in the conduct of elections in our country.
Our Party restates its position that no candidate should be declared a winner of any election until all legal processes are concluded. This is to prevent the inclination to resort to self-help through the use of violence and manipulation to secure unearned victory as witnessed in the Imo and Kogi States governorship elections.
The PDP as a law-abiding Party, respects the decision of the Supreme Court despite our Party’s deep reservations and urges Nigerians to remain calm but determined in the collective quest to ensure the entrenchment of credible elections in our country.

- The Meeting deliberated on crucial intra-party and governance matters affecting our states as well as those of overriding national interest and importance.
- The Governors noted with a sigh of relief the end of the #EndBadGovernance protests which was edging to a major national crisis. We salute the dexterity of the Governors especially of the PDP extraction in handling the situation in their respective States with maturity, thereby restraining hoodlums and other unscrupulous elements from hijacking the protests.
- The Forum reiterates that peaceful protests are the inalienable rights of the citizens through which they vent their genuine grievances. The Forum commiserates with the families of those innocent souls that were lost and calls on the Federal Government to ensure fair and speedy trial of those who were arrested.
- The Forum laments that rather than undertake a review of macro-economic and social policies with a view to giving them a human face, the Federal Government has resorted to blackmail. We call on Mr. President to show statesmanship by restraining his officials from blame games, that make the sub-nationals look bad by mentioning piecemeal interventions that cannot solve the problem. We remain unshaken in our firm resolve to stand with the suffering Nigerian masses and to take all legitimate steps to ameliorate their plight.
- The Forum notes the political impasse in Rivers State where court judgements are employed to determine the outcome of the party congresses. The PDP Governors’ Forum restates its stand with the Governor of Rivers State and will engage the NWC of our great party to revisit the congress with a view to correcting the anomaly and allowing His Excellency Governor Siminalayi Fubara to take his rightful leadership position of the party in the state,
- With regard to the forth coming governorship election in Edo State, we condemn the pronouncements by the President to compromise the election in favour of his Party as well as the systematic intimidation of PDP supporters by the Nigeria Police and call on the Inspector General of Police to call his men to order.
- The Forum notes with concern, the refusal of the Federal Government to distinguish between the Federal Government of Nigeria, FGN revenue and revenue accruing to the Federation which must be allocated in accordance with extant laws. We call on the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Accountant General of the Federation to be more transparent in obeying the law, particularly section 162 (1) (2) (3). And equally call on the Accountant General of the Federation to stop behaving like the Accountant General of the Federal Government and to exercise her role in line with constitution. Therefore, we call for the separation of the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation and that of the Accountant General of the FGN.
- Finally, the Forum commends the host, the Taraba State Government, under Governor Agbu Kefas, for the hospitality accorded members of the Forum and the Secretariat and noted with delight the giant steps taken to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of the state; which is in line with the governance philosophy of the PDP.
His Excellency Sen. Bala Mohammed.
Governor of Bauchi State.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE
PRESIDENT TINUBU SWEARS IN JUSTICE KEKERE-EKUN AS ACTING CHIEF JUSTICE OF NIGERIA, SAYS INDEPENDENCE OF JUDICIARY CRITICAL FOR PRESERVING SOCIAL ORDER, PEACE AND SECURITY
President Bola Tinubu on Friday administered oath of office on Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), pending her confirmation by the Senate.
The swearing-in of the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria and the second female justice to hold the office took place at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.
In his remarks, President Tinubu urged the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria to defend the independence of the judiciary and promote the cause of justice.
The President emphasized the importance of strengthening mechanisms that will uphold and enhance integrity, discipline, and transparency in the judiciary.
”Undoubtedly, the position of the Chief Justice of Nigeria comes with enormous responsibilities as the head of all judicial institutions in the country. It is a position of considerable influence that demands temperance and sobriety.
”The occupant of the office must exude the highest level of integrity in the discharge of their duties. This is more so because of the finality of the Supreme Court’s judgments.
”I, therefore, urge your Lordship to be faithful and loyal to the Constitution when discharging your duty as the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.
”I also encourage you to defend the judiciary’s independence and always promote the cause of justice. It is vital that you strengthen all mechanisms for integrity, discipline, and transparency in the judicial sector, and pursue other reforms or initiatives to sustain and build public confidence in the judiciary,” the President stated.
President Tinubu also lauded the contributions of Justice Kekere-Ekun to the judiciary, noting that she is coming to the position with an admirable family and professional pedigree.
”Over the years, she has established a respectable and incorruptible reputation within the bar and the bench, which asserts the cause of justice.
”Her meritorious rise from a magistrate to justice of the Supreme Court is a testament to her exceptional talent, hard work, unblemished record, strong work ethic, and dedication to her calling as a priest in the temple of justice.
”Her sterling contribution to the growth of the Nigerian judiciary has been remarkable. We are inspired by her unwavering commitment to a higher ideal of upholding the principles of fairness and a strong commitment to humanity.
”Justice Kekere-Ekun is a brilliant lawyer who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981. She’s now a trailblazer becoming the second woman to hold this esteemed position after Honourable Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, GCON,” the President said.
President Tinubu noted that the appointment of the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria is an inspiration and a beacon of hope to young women who aspire to break glass ceilings across sectors and seek to make meaningful impact on society.
Reflecting on the roles and evolution of the Nigerian Supreme Court since it was empowered by the 1963 Constitution to take over from the then Judicial Committee of the Privy Council as the highest court, the President noted that the court has played a critical role in resolving complex legal conflicts, even under the military.
He acknowledged the role of the Supreme Court in shaping public policies that impact all segments of society, citing the recent interpretation of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) regarding the financial autonomy of local councils in Nigeria.
Highlighting the expedited passage of the Judicial Autonomy Act of 2024, which increased the remuneration of judicial officers by 300 percent, President Tinubu assured the judiciary of continued support from his administration in the expeditious improvement of its welfare and capacity.
He cited the appointment of 11 new justices of the Supreme Court in December 2023, which is enabling the court to work efficiently as it attained its full complement of 21 justices for the first time in decades.
”Let me also reassure you that the judiciary under this administration will continue to receive prompt and adequate attention, recognizing its status as a driver of social order, rule of law, peace, security and economic development,” the President said.
President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, commending him for his 32 years of service to the judiciary and the nation.
Speaking to the media after the swearing-in, the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria pledged to elevate the judiciary to new heights, improve its reputation, and sustain public confidence in the judicial system.
”We will make sure that people have more confidence in the judiciary, and I believe that it is not a one-man job. We all have to be on board because we all see the areas that are in need of improvement.
”I believe that there will be maximum cooperation because we all want to see a better judiciary.
”A better judiciary is for the benefit of the entire nation. Whatever the shortcomings that we see today are, we are all members of the society so, if we want to see a better society, if we want to see improvement, let the improvement start with each and every one of us and our approach to justice.
”Let us all have faith in the system and then also be particular about the process of appointment, I know it is a source of a lot of concern; the issue of discipline on the bench and at the bar as well.
”All of these things are aspects that we will look into and I believe that by the grace of God, at the end of my tenure, we should be able to have a judiciary that we will all be proud of,” the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria said.
The event was witnessed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio; the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola; former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed; justices of the Supreme Court, senior judicial officers, and some members of the Federal Executive Council.
The family of the acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, led by her spouse, Mr. Akin Kekere-Ekun was also present at the State House Council Chamber.
As part of measures to ensure the welfare of the judiciary, the federal budgetary allocation to the institution was increased by 100 percent during President Tinubu’s first year in office.

EDO YOUTHS COME OUT HARD AGAINST PDP, REAFFIRM SUPPORT FOR APC, OKPEBHOLO

· LIST TERRIBLE CONDITION OF THE STATE, BETRAYAL, BOGUS CONTRACTS AS PDP KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
Edo youths on Sunday reaffirmed their unflinching support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.
‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo remains an outstanding leader. He will improve the healthcare delivery system, allow the people to decide what types of programmes and policies to implement, channel more resources to poor communities, design appropriate institutional management and control mechanisms to ensure that funds are well spent and transform the state from its current state of economic distress to a more economically viable and prosperous state.
They also urged eligible voters in the state to reject the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP) candidates in the September 11 governorship election.
‘’The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo will raise the standard of living of Edo people. His agenda is shaped with different goals in mind. First, he wants to protect the lives, property and rights of Edo people. Secondly, he wants to make the government more efficient and better, improve the state’s civil service and build railroads. Thirdly, he has interest in better education, youth development, industry and commerce’’
The highly intelligent and spirited men and women urged Edo people to make Okpebholo’s cause their own.
‘’Our long nightmare is over. Senator Monday Okpebholo is a man of principle, courage and an inspiration to the good people of Edo State. His words are sharp and emphatic. The other candidates lack dynamics, political skill, wisdom and experience’’.
In a statement issued by the Youth Alliance for Edo Unity and Progress (YAEUP) in Ekpoma, the youths approved Okpebholo/Idahosa ticket for the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
‘’What is needed at a time like this are men of honour and integrity who will promote peace, diligence, commitment and selfless service to the state’’
The statement titled Common Sense was signed by YAEUP Director of Mobilization, Dr. Matthew Agbonifo.
‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo will make life comfortable for the people of Edo State, appoint more youths and women to major posts, bring millions into the state’s social security system, provide funds for medical research, hospitals and urban renewal’’
The statement underscored Okpebholo’s ease of expression, gentlemanly nature and impeccable character.
The youths listed terrible condition of the state, widespread poverty, neglect of the economic wellbeing of the people, squandering the state’s meagre resources on bogus contracts and stunted growth as key achievements of the current PDP administration in the state.
‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo is more interested in improving the lot of Edo people. He will put in place a dynamic cabinet, contribute to the growth of an industrial economy, create millions of jobs, build roads, provide good housing for Edo people, help the urban and rural poor and make other internal improvements’’
Monday Okpebhoo will focus on education, health, security, food production, sports, roads rehabilitation and construction, tourism, salaries and pension
Group restates Okpebholo’s development plans
A group, Okpebholo Change Movement, has explained why the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has not chosen to run from pillar to post with his work plan for the development of Edo State.
‘’Edo requires a governor with sound vision, dedication and focus, one who will bring his ingenuity to bear in the management of the state’s economic potential and the natural endowments. In Edo State today, there is growing fervor for what Senator Monday Okpebholo stands for. More than ever before, the people of the state have come to recognize the fact that the APC candidate is a huge asset to them’’
The group noted that empty vessel makes the greatest noise.
‘’Monday Okpebholo did not come crashing into the political scene. He has cut the image of a well-focused, incisive and inspiring statesman. The APC governorship candidate knows the political terrain and will provide good leadership and turn the fortunes of Edo State around positively. ’’
The group in a statement on Monday in Benin said that if a ruling party had proved its worth before the Edo electorate, it doesn’t need to use foul language on opponents or run on empty manifesto before the people could renew the mandate of the party.
‘’It is becoming evident that the people of Edo State, including PDP and LP supporters, have made up their minds to support Senator Monday Okpebholo’’
The statement signed by the spokesperson of OKpebholo Change Movement, Dr. Francis Aghahowa described the so-called PDP manifesto as mission in futility and rehearse of old tunes.
‘’In their campaigns, there is no fascination. Our people have made it clear that things must change, the status quo cannot continue, our state is in danger’’
The group expressed regrets about the way the resources in the state were allegedly being frittered away by the government.
‘’Senator Monday Okpebholo is a selfless, caring and compassionate person, who thinks of others first before himself. He will rebuild Edo State, put in place broad-based and inclusive government, pay adequate attention to interests that will assist in the overall development of the state and spread social and infrastructural amenities in Edo State. In making appointment, Okpebholo will take the entire geography of the state into consideration and give the people of Edo State the God intended confidence, economic empowerment and security’’
The group vowed to work with all determination, courage, commitment and due respect for the rule of law to ensure the candidate’s victory.
‘’We need to invest more in Okpebholo. We need to give him the chance to ensure effective and gainful farming, steady economic growth, boom in economic activities, the presence of genuine foreign investors and large industrial parks in the state’’
The statement listed education, health, security, food production, sports, roads rehabilitation and construction, tourism, salaries and pension as key areas of the next administration.
‘Senator Monday Okpebholo will encourage the people to invest and own shares in government-oriented projects and businesses’’
Family announces date for late Wilson Santa Ebireri’s burial

Family announces date for late Wilson Santa Ebireri’s burial
A highly respected Niger Delta family on Saturday talked animatedly about ebullient business entrepreneur, Mr. Wilson Ebireri.
The family praised Wilson Ebireri for his moral convictions and handling of issues.
Death seized Wilson Ebireri so firmly in the early hours of Friday, July 12, 2024 in Sapele, five months before his 71st birthday.
Fondly called ‘’Santa’’ by friends and associates, Wilson Ebireri, according to the family, was very energetic, positive and happy.
‘’With Wilson Santa Ebireri, it was either black or white. No task was too insignificant to him to perform in aid of the family. No journey too perilous for him to undertake’’ the family said.
A statement on Sunday said members of the family met to pray for the repose of the soul of Wilson Ebireri, a caring father and one of Delta’s most energetic and colourful business men.
‘’The family met and picked Friday, September 19 and 20 for the great funeral rites of the father of six sons, a daughter and grandchildren’’.
The statement signed by an elder in the family, Henry Ovie Ebireri, said a service of songs would be held on Thursday, September 19 at Ikomi Road by 5pm.
‘’The body of Wilson Santa Ebireri will depart Obule Hospital on September 20, for his Ikomi Road residence, in Sapele’’.
The statement also said internment would take place on September 20 by 12 noon at Marford Close while reception will be at Okotie-Eboh Grammar School, Sapele.
HOTELIERS IN SAPELE RAISE ALARM OVER HIGHER TARIFFS IN ELECTRICITY BILLS

….. Says BEDC Officials Manipulated Systems, Decry Monthly Charges In Excess of #7m
Hoteliers and owners of business concerns in the ancient city of Sapele, headquarters of Sapele local Government are crying out to the government and well meaning individuals to come to their rescue following what they describe as spiraling and outrageous electricity charges by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC that has refused all forms of reasoning.
The cries of these hoteliers are hinged on recent hike in electricity for Band A consumers of electricity has resulted in BEDC officials allegedly tampering with power transformers located close to their different entities and reconfiguring the system.
A member of the Association of Hotels Owners, resident in the ancient city who spoke with journalists over the weekend, while pleading that his name should not be mentioned for fear of victimization, said that his monthly consumption bills rose from #300, 000:00 to over #1.2m. He wondered how his fellow members with larger facilities will be coping as many of them are now paying over #8m-#11m on a monthly basis. He called for understanding, as this will force many to close down their businesses over their inability to meet up with daily expenses and cost of running generating plants to bridge the gap in the epileptic power supply to the town.
Sapele, back in the late 60’s, 70’s and 80’s was a town that was filled with a beehive of commercial activities is now a shadow of its old self with businesses going under daily with the harsh economic downturn due to the absence of adequate power supply to the town. The presence of the Ogorode Power Plant, notwithstanding, has been a huge minus, as they cannot boast of steady six hours daily power supply. To make matters worse, BEDC has become a thorn in the flesh of the inhabitants.
The unfavourable business environment has compelled many to relocate their businesses elsewhere in order to survive. Sadly, hotel owners cannot adopt a similar approach considering the fact that they cannot remove structures built with hard-earned resources but are instead, appealing to government to come to their aid by imploring upon BEDC to address the issue.
Meanwhile, available information reveal that BEDC officials have insisted that there is no going back in the tariff hike and not even government or anybody can reverse their decision.
The high handedness of the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company in Sapele, under the watch of Messers Friday Okosun, Austin Isibor and Precious Ogodo has become a huge source of worry to inhabitants.
Further reports also indict the trio of being responsible for the recalibrations of the maximum demand metres in the city as, sometime in the year 2022, a pretentious energy tracing team from BEDC visited some Band A consumers sub-station located within the premises of some industries such as Hotels and Eateries. Their mission was to compromise the Maximum Demand Meter (MD) affixed to the transformer to make them read faster and increase the units of energy consumed.
“Their action resulted in very high billing of all Band A consumers as they all started receiving over 300% of their former bills. For example, hotels that use to consume 10,000 units jumped to 34,000, 39,000, 40,000 units and above without any additional new building, no new equipment but with the same volume of patronage. The bills also increased from 600k, 1.4m, 1.9m, 2.5m, 2.9m 3.2m monthly. While these hospitality industries were groaning under these huge bills, Mr. Okosun, the regional manager, decided to implement the recently hike in tariff by the Minister of Power, from 67.45 to 225 naira per unit of energy consumed.” Another Hotel owner lamented.
“The April bills for hotels ranges from #5.9million to #10million for some while others are contending with bills for electricity consumed, from between #11.5m, #14.7m and #17.6m. The Hotels Owners Association drew the attention of the BEDC management to the ongoing debate at the National Assembly and the NLC negotiations with the Federal Government.
“We pleaded that we will pay the bills but with the old tariff rate of 67.45 pending the outcome of the actions the the legislators and Labour. They agreed. To our greatest dismay, after making payments, Mr. Okosun still went ahead to give a directive to disconnect supply without notice, insisting that we must make payment in full. The question is, how does he expect that a Hotel located in Sapele would be to pay 11.5m for electricity every month?
Who will save Hotel owners in Sapele?
Recall that, in trying to broker a peaceful resolution of the situation between the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, the Federal House of Representatives had called on the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to suspend forthwith the implementation of the new electricity tariff nationwide. Is the BEDC saying that the House of Representatives has no powers to intervene?

Abuja-Kano Road Project: Eco-conscious construction
In his advert on May 29, 2024, to mark his achievements on the first year anniversary of the present federal government of Nigeria in office, Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi stated that against all odds, the rehabilitation of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road, Section II, that is, the Kaduna-Zaria axis is now 90% complete.
The Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road (AKR) is a significant highway project contracted to leading engineering construction company to revamp from the Federal Capital city, Abuja through Kaduna and Zaria to Kano.
The project involves the reconstruction and infrastructure development of a 375 km section of the A2 highway which runs from the capital city, Abuja, to the city of Kano in northern Nigeria. The goal being to establish better connections between the northern regions of Nigeria and the southern parts to enhance transportation, trade, and economic development in the region.
In addition to roadway reconstruction, the project includes the provision of footbridges, road lighting, toll roads, service stations, and rest facilities along the highway.
The project is part of the Trans-African Highways network, which aims to create well-developed road-based trade corridors across Africa.
A notable feature of the project is the use of cold recycling with foamed bitumen as the construction method. Cold recycling is an environmentally friendly approach that optimally utilizes existing construction materials and conserves valuable resources.
In the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Project, Julius Berger is employing the Bitumen Stabilised Material, BSM mixture of reclaimed asphalt pavement material, foamed binder, active filler and fresh aggregates to produce a unique road infrastructure for the government of Nigeria. The reason is simple.
As road construction surges across Nigeria, the depletion of crucial resources like gravels and granites poses a significant challenge. The tremendous 380km length of the Abuja-Kano Road project requires blasting and excavation of rocks and granites. It is in response to this development that Julius Berger introduced this Cold In-Place recycling technique, revolutionizing the approach to infrastructure development.
Road construction puts pressure on natural resources like gravels and granites depleting its availability for future use.
To mitigate the environmental impact of the project, Julius Berger, for the first time in Nigeria, introduced the Cold In-Place recycling methodology. This approach enhances both road durability and eco-consciousness and has attracted attention all over Nigeria.
The Ahmadu Bello University Zaria now partners Julius Berger Nigeria Plc in an internship programme that allows its students understudy the methodology for practical experience to replicate for sustainable road construction. This is a plus for the loaded CSR CV of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.
This innovative method has numerous benefits. The new road is planned to have an increased bearing capacity, compared to the previous pavement constructed with granular base course, leading to an extended lifespan. It is environmentally friendly and helps to conserve natural resources, considering the reduced need for new material to be mined / damaged asphalt to be dumped. Furthermore, construction traffic is greatly reduced compared to conventional methods; meaning fewer heavy load bearing trucks on the road, reducing road congestion and diminishing the burden on the livelihood of the surrounding communities.
It also underscores the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and collaborative progress, as evidenced by partnerships with educational institutions like Ahmadu Bello University Zaria.
Julius Berger Nigeria PLC is always looking for solutions to lead us into the sustainable future.
With the introduction of Bitumen-Stabilized Material (BSM) to Nigeria, JBN is the first company, to make use of existing (recycled) materials by means of Cold Recycling Technology.
BSM simply means, Cold recycling with Foamed Bitumen aka Bitumen-Stabilized Material – is commonly RAP material and/or Granular Base Course (GBC) material mixed with a limited amount of Cement as an Active Filler, Water and Foamed Bitumen, which is produced by injecting water to hot Bitumen.
After six years of BSM experience for the Abuja-Kano Road, the significant advantages of laying BSM are practically visible. It increases the structural strength of the road due to an increase in cohesion to withstand traffic loads immediately after construction. Furthermore, BSM reduces the moisture sensitivity drastically.
According to some published literature, Julius Berger brings together people, materials, and machinery at the right time and at the right place in order to implement new, innovative products into the construction market.
Which was why that by mid-July 2023, Trial Field Tests were conducted with PolyGRA (Supplier: Gradient), which is a polymeric modifier. This granulate is added directly to the asphalt mixer resulting in Polymer modified Asphalt (PmA) by making use of Standard Bitumen 60/70.
Several representatives of Ministry of Works and the Pavement Evaluation Unit (PEU) reportedly joined in the exercise to monitor the performance of PmA and to follow up with further long-term tests. So far, Julius Berger continues to get applause for the innovation, the publication stated.
Inspite of intervening factors, there have been ongoing efforts to complete and upgrade the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano road. As of now, 100 kilometres (though not in a continuous stretch) have been completed under sections one to three (Abuja-Kano), 40 kilometres have been completed under section two (Kaduna-Zaria) and 70 kilometres have been completed under section three (Zaria-Kano).
The recent hour bestowed on Julius Berger Nigeria Plc by the prestigious Environment Reporters Association of Nigeria, ERAN no doubt underscores the foregoing.
According to the specialised Group of Journalists, we note that, after we have carried out discreet survey on your operational activities majorly on your adherence to Environmental Impact Assessment, EIA over the years, we decided to honour Julius Berger Plc as a corporate body with 2023 Environmental Best Practices
Award.
The Group continued: besides your adherence to EIA, we discovered that your construction operations have been strictly within the ambit of environmental laws for the sustainability of the Nigerian Environment in consonance with global standards.
ERAN further noted that Julius Berger’s operational modalities comply with international best practices and respect the environmental rights of communities in your areas of operations with professional sound analytical and research skills, combined with scientific and technical experience in management and administration resulting in demonstrable achievements in the preservation, restoration and development of the Nigerian environment, as a body.
In fact, what Julius Berger is doing on the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road project is employing cutting edge innovative approach that aims to reduce the strain on the environment during building and design processes that would result in creating healthier living spaces while minimizing environmental impact. Simply put, that is, being eco-conscious in road construction.

Julius Berger 54th AGM approves Gross Dividend Payout of N4.8bn

. We’ll keep our position as a leader within Corporate Nigeria, vows Chairman
. Managing Director: We’ll continue to prevail as partner for progress
Leading engineering construction company, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is paying out a gross dividend of N4.8billion to shareholders even as the company is determined to maintain its position as a leader in corporate Nigeria.
At the company’s 54th Annual General Meeting, AGM held in Abuja yesterday, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu said, ‘though we have endured formidable challenges, our Company’s financial performance and resilience for the year 2023 was exceptional, resulting in yet another record-breaking year following the highly successful outcomes of 2022.’
Stressing that a greater scenario is projected to play out in the current financial year, the chairman disclosed that the Board of Directors is pleased to recommend a dividend of N3.00 per 50 Kobo ordinary share, resulting in a total gross dividend payout of N4.8 billion.”
He said the pressures were magnified by the 2023 general election lulls, administrative transition periods, and policy shifts at both the State and Federal levels, adding that, thanks to forward-looking cost management, strong contracts management and unmatched efficiencies in procurement, our Company’s financial results have remained largely in line with planning, while earnings before taxes improved. Such positive outcomes were mirrored across our Group, in which rigorous management combined with excellent performance led to a Group revenue of #443 billion, exceeding planning and reaching a historic high.
He further said that Julius Berger has continued to set the benchmark for reliable and high-quality engineering and construction services, through which the positive impact of its operations has been felt across the country.
In the reporting year, he continued, we have commissioned the Second River Niger Bridge Main Contract and Temporary Access Road, as well as the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road Sections 2 and 3 – both projects of national priority. We have completed key projects including the Lagos-Shagamu Expressway projects for the Office of the National Security Adviser, and the State House Clinic in Abuja – while progressing other significant works.
Mr. Mutiu said in parallel, the company has acquired strategic projects, such as the Port Harcourt Ring Road as well as expanding its footprint into both Delta and Abia States, thus extending its operations into new territories and furthering positive impact in the South-South and South- East zones. The Board chairman also said that the same outcome played out in its various subsidiaries that have continued to perform with excellence, in line with their individual strategic targets.
Julius Berger International GmbH he also said, has continued to progress its growth aspirations in solidifying the Julius Berger brand within the German construction industry, saying that, it has achieved a larger share of technical services with external customers than that within the Group, opened its first regional office in the Ahr Valley, and enlarged its workforce and therefore its expertise -all while increasing revenue, implementing its sustainable design-and-engineering strategy and achieving an Eco Vadis silver rating recertification for excellent environmental, social and governance (ESG) management.
Furthermore, the chairman said, within the Julius Berger Group, diversification has remained high on the agenda – both in regard to risk management and as a driver of sustainable growth providing opportunities to increase our impact and reach beyond construction and beyond Nigeria. Thus, in line with regional expansion targets of the company, a Julius Berger branch office has been opened in Cotonou, Benin Republic, with road rehabilitation contracts already underway.
ahead, he said, maintaining the strong brand, financial resilience and culture of excellence remains central to corporate goals, adding that, with our renewed vision and with our mission and values as guiding principles, together with our business strategy and operational frameworks, we remain determined to achieve the growth of our Group, no matter the challenge.
Sunmonu then declared that notwithstanding the colossal hurdles the company will need to overcome, it will maintain its position as a leader within Nigeria’s corporate landscape, while expanding its reach and impact through existing Group activities and through well-defined diversification agenda.
Speaking in the same light, the Managing Director, Engr. Dr. Lars Richter said the company will continue to prevail as a partner for progress inspite of the challenging operating environment.
In his speech at the august event, the Managing Director gave shareholders of the company’s activities in 2023 stressing that issues like inflation, currency devaluation, insufficient funding of major projects among others constituted challenges the company had to cope with.
He said, that though Julius Berger is very familiar with challenges, the challenges right now have been exceptionally difficult adding however that, with greater challenges come greater zeal to thrive for the company and the country, Nigeria.
We will continue to evolve business continuity measures while adjusting to the challenges in the operating environment, he said.
In the foregoing context, the Managing Director said subsidiaries in the Group are not left out even as diversification remains a key tactic of doing business well, mentioning the launching of Julius Berger, Cotonou, Benin Republic to buttress his position just as he gave a low down on some projects being constructed by the company in Lagos, Abia, Delta and Rivers States.
The Managing Director then declared: the challenges may be unprecedented, may tough; but there is no doubt that Julius Berger will continue to prevail as a partner for progress.
