PRESIDENT BUHARI CELEBRATES 165 YEARS OF CHRISTIANITY IN IGBO LAND, CMS ANNIVERSARY

DETERMINED TO BE IN THE HEADLINES, PDP SENATORS ARE DIVIDED, CONFUSED

The performative and babyish antics of those senators staging a walk out notwithstanding, Senate President Ahmad Lawan’s refusal on Wednesday to entertain the ridiculous motion to impeach our President was quite appropriate and correct.

Rather than making a mockery out of voters by trying to imitate what they see in America, the opposition would be well advised that their time would be better spent tackling the pressing issues Nigerians face, such as the current global cost of living crisis.

Their continued failure to do so goes some way to explaining why they remain in opposition.

In contrast, the President Muhammadu Buhari administration is committed to finding lasting solutions to the emerging security threats, including those left behind by the PDP in the South-South, the Northeast and throughout the federation. In the last 24 hours, two more Chibok girls were freed, in addition to the three brought home last week.

These kinds of headline grabbing stunts for which the opposition is now well known serve no one, least of all their constituents. We would respectfully remind them that it is those same constituents that they were elected to serve, and are paid to do so with public money.

We would welcome their collaboration in our efforts to solve the problems Nigerians face on a daily basis. No one is asking them to waste their time attempting to impeach a democratically elected President at the end of his second term – certainly not their constituents.

They should ask themselves: do they want to be in government or do they want to be in the headlines? If they want to be in government they should start acting like it and stop undermining Nigerian voters.

PRESIDENT BUHARI CELEBRATES 165 YEARS OF CHRISTIANITY IN IGBO LAND, CMS ANNIVERSARY

President Muhammadu Buhari joins members of the Anglican Communion in Igbo land and around the world in celebrating the 165th anniversary of the coming of Christianity in the Eastern part of Nigeria on July 27, 1857.

The Rev Samuel Ajayi Crowther, who later became the first African Anglican bishop of West Africa, had led the Church Missionary Society (CMS) team, including Rev. John Christopher Taylor, Catechist Simon Jonas and Augustus Armadillo and others in the 1857 Niger expedition.

President Buhari urges the Christian faithful celebrating CMS anniversary to uphold the values of love, compassion, sacrifice, forgiveness and selflessness in a diverse country like Nigeria, in recognition of what the true Christian faith teaches and recommends to all adherents.

He says that this celebration of faith, hope and victory is an opportunity for reverent worship to God and prayers for the unity, stability and prosperity of the country, at a time like this.

URGENT PUBLIC NOTICE

The approval of four work-free days (26th, 27th, 28th and 29th July 2022) to enable Lagos State Civil Servants obtain their Permanent Voters’ Cards has been largely misconstrued. It has therefore become necessary to set the records straight and put the approval granted by Mr. Governor in proper context.

  1. Mr. Governor’s approval was in response to agitations by Civil Servants for an opportunity to register and collect their Permanent Voter’s Cards before the Independent National Election Commission’s (INEC) deadline of 31st July 2022.
  2. In granting his approval, Mr. Governor made it clear that seventy-five percent (75%) of the workforce must be available throughout the four days to ensure the smooth running of Government business. This explains why the Junior, Middle management and Senior Officers in the Public Service were batched according to Grade Levels and allotted one day per batch to ensure that no Public Servant would be denied the opportunity of fulfilling his/her civic duty, being the right of every citizen, particularly to participate in the upcoming Y2023 general elections. For the avoidance of doubt, the Circular Ref. No. CIR/HOS/’22/Vol.1/034 of 25 July 2022 which is titled: Collection of Permanent Voters’ Card, is in the public domain.
  3. This clarification has, therefore, become necessary to debunk the falsehood and deliberate misinformation being perpetuated by mischief workers, perhaps with a deliberate intention of politicising a standard administrative process. The same administrative mechanism was deployed during the COVID-19 Pandemic to ensure social distance as well as public health and safety when only twenty-five percent (25%) of Lagos State Government workers conducted Government business effectively and efficiently, while other public servants worked remotely or from home. It is mischievous and dishonest to read political meaning into a sincere gesture.

Our attention has been drawn to a viral online story on social media platforms with the headline: “Lagos Deputy Governor, Others Beaten up in Free for All Fight at the APC Secretariat”.

According to the news item, the Deputy Governor and some senior members of the Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were reported to have been beaten up by aggrieved political miscreants during a reconciliation meeting at the Party’s Secretariat in Ogba.

The Office of the Deputy Governor, however, wishes to state in unequivocal terms and for the information of millions of readers that the report is untrue, mischievous, fake and unfounded.

Iyorcha Ayu: A political reformist aiming at  rescuing, rebuilding Nigeria.

By Bisi Ezekiel

The emergence of Dr. Iyorchia Ayu on Sunday, October 31st 2021,  as the National Chairman of the largest political party in Africa and  Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) did not come as a surprise to political pundits.

The quiet but great political achiever was thoroughly sorted out for the job of rescuing the PDP from collapse following the crisis that resulted in the suspension of his predecessor in office, Prince Uche Secondus as national chairman.

No wonder his acceptability as a consensus candidate for the party’s position.

He made it clear from the onset that his mission was to reform PDP and set the party currently in opposition on the path of rescuing the country from maladministration of the APC and rebuilding the nation back to her past glory.

Ayu, a former Senate President and 20 others, elected members of the National Working Committee (NWC) hit the ground running by promising to allow every organ of the party to function effectively without usurpation of functions by the other.

To further strengthen membership drive across the nation, the NWC said it will  back the Governor Godwin Obaseki led Membership E- Registration Committee in generating a comprehensive party register of all PDP members in Nigeria.

The Ayu led NWC desirous if accountability inaugurated a committee to do staff auditing to enable it know number of actual staff of the party, their designation and remuneration.

A Tender Board was inaugurated to track every contract involving the party to block financial leakages.

In a very rare bold step, Dr. Ayu led other members of the NWC on an assessment visit to the uncompleted PDP national secretariat at the Central Business District of Abuja.

He promised completion of the project, to generate funds for the party in terms of rents and to provide enough office space for staff.

To achieve this, Ayu said many options would be explored which may include but not restricted to collaborating with private estate developers.

He said the party will give its all to the Bukola Saraki led National Reconciliation Committee saddled with the responsibility of fixing crisis in state chapters and bringing old members back to PDP family.

Ayu displayed his dispute management ability in the just concluded Ekiti governorship primary election by cancelling previously conducted ward election by some aspirants, thereby leaving contestants to rely on statutory and automatic list of delegates for  the primary.

This goes a long way to avoid further crisis a d made the outcome of the primary election largely acceptable.

With his mission of Rebuild and Rescue Nigeria, there is a renewed hope that come 2023, the Peoples Democratic Party will rescue power at the centre from the ruling APC.

The convention which took place at the Eagle Square, Abuja, began on Saturday and lasted till the early morning of Sunday.

But you need to know the man, Iyorchia Ayu, the new national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Dr. Iyorchia Ayu was born in Gboko in Benue State. He served as sociology lecturer at the University of Jos, including courses on the art and science of Marxism. He was the Chairman of the Jos University chapter of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

As a new entrant into politics, Ayu was influential among the majority Tiv people in his home state of Benue and was elected Senator in the Third Republic on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and was elected President of the upper chamber of the National Assembly (1992–1993).

In November 1993, the senate impeached Ayu, who was a strong opponent of the Interim National Government established after the elected president Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola had been prevented from taking office.

However, he later became the Minister for Education in General Sani Abacha’s military government. In March 1994 he chaired a workshop on Technical Education in Nigeria, seeking ways to learn from Germany, the United States, Britain and Japan.

He is reputed to be the political godfather of George Akume, governor of Benue State from 1999 to 2007 who is now in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and Minister for Special Duties.

Ayu assisted in the 1998-1999 campaign to elect President Olusegun Obasanjo on the PDP platform, and Obasanjo in return, appointed him as Minister for Industry from 1999 to 2000.

Ayu was also appointed as Minister of Internal Affairs in July 2003. In September 2003 Ayu announced that Nigeria was negotiating security pacts with its northern neighbours Niger and Chad to clamp down on smuggling, human-trafficking and cross border banditry.

During a cabinet reshuffle in June 2005, Ayu was reassigned to become Minister of Environment. At a meeting in Rotterdam in September 2005, Ayu called for an effective, sufficient and predictable financial mechanism to provide the technical skills and infrastructure needed for African countries to handle chemicals safely.

He later served in various Ministerial positions in the Cabinet of President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007.

Delta Guber: No going back on Oborevwori – DPV

The Leadership of the Delta Political Vanguard (DPV) has said it would continue its support for the governorship ambition of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori until the courts rule otherwise.

National Chairman of the group and PDP candidate for Delta South Senatorial District, Hon. Michael Diden, disclosed this while addressing members at a meeting in Asaba on Tuesday.

He urged PDP faithful in the state to remain resolute and defend their choice of Oborevwori as the party’s guber candidate.

He said that as stakeholders they have supported and worked for the leaders in the past and expect them to work for them too instead of dragging them to court on frivolous accusations.

“In 2018, i contested for Senate primaries and many people here supported me but I lost the election but for the sake of the party we put everything behind us and worked for the victory of the party in all elections.

“Now it is our turn they need to work for us to become Senators, Governor and President. If we can join them to work for them why can’t they join us to work for us?

“All that contested the governorship under the party, are all our friends and brothers but Sheriff Oborevwori was generally accepted and voted overwhelmingly at the party primaries and we will stand to defend our votes,” he said.

Welcoming members earlier, Director-General of the group, Hon. Ifeanyi Eboigbe, said the meeting was called to pray and glorify the name of God ahead of the Appeal court ruling.

He urged members to remain confident and hopeful for a favourable outcome at the Appeal court, adding that they would not allow anyone to come through the back door to become governor in the state.

“We are here to glorify God today and to let Deltans and Nigerians at large know that we DPV and PDP family in Delta are strongly waiting for the court ruling.

“We are very confident and we are not shaking at all and we are using this medium to tell all our followers that we are not disturbed.

“We remain resolute in our support for Sheriff Oborevwori because the primary election was won overwhelmingly by him and we will not allow anyone to short change that.

“As it was in 2015 and 2019 so it shall be in 2023, we did it before with your support and that of Deltans and we will do it again. Our hands are wide open and we welcome everybody because the more the merrier.

“And we shall be having a mega rally on August 14 at a venue to be communicated later,” he said.

Other leaders who spoke at the meeting include Bashorun Askia Ogieh, Chief Iduh Amadhe, Hon. Joan Onyemaechi, Hon. Daniel Mayuku and Engr. Christabel Obiuwevbi.

They urged members to remain united in support of the PDP and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar who had graciously chosen Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.

The meeting featured prayers for Sheriff Oborevwori and his running mate Chief Monday Onyeme as well as Atiku and Okowa.

‘Vibrant Africa: The Rising Rhythm’ – Culture Festival 2022 to hold August 19-21 in Lagos

The Culture Festival, a global event series organised by the Art of Living Foundation, has been confirmed to hold in Lagos from 19 – 21 August 2022.

Themed “Vibrant Africa: The Rising Rhythm”, the Festival aims to build a compassionate and harmonious society by bringing the people of the world together in celebration. Through song, dance, meditation, and dialogue, attendees will share and explore their rich cultural diversity, while honouring the underlying spirit that connects us all as one global family.

Highlighting the essence of this year’s theme, the founder of the Art of Living Foundation,  Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar, said, “Today in the world, where there is so much polarity, it is time to unite everybody. We know sports can unite. We know the economy can unite – as when it comes to business, everyone forgets their nationality and culture. Faith also unites, while the first and perhaps most important, is culture. Dance and music can also foster unity and that’s what the Culture Festival 2022 seeks to achieve.”

“The Festival will be like an Olympics for artists; an Olympics for culture. Without music and dance, life at times could feel so dry. If we all work harmoniously, we can envisage a better world for the coming generation and live like we are all one family,” Gurudev concluded.

Set to be hosted at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, the Festival will also mark the 40th anniversary of the Art of Living Foundation. The Foundation is the world’s largest educational and humanitarian organisation, with the single motive to create a stress-free and violence-free society through fostering individual well-being and societal development.

Leveraging local initiatives like ‘I Meditate Africa’ and ‘Voice of Africa’, Art of Living has reached over 2.3 million Africans and united 22 African countries through peace campaigns. The Foundation has been teaching Happiness and Youth Leadership Training Programs in Nigeria for more than 10 years, and has impacted thousands of people in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Kano, Kaduna, Abuja, Enugu and Delta States. In partnership with the University of Lagos, the Foundation launched the Drug Free Nigeria campaign to create awareness about drug abuse and addiction among youths.

Past editions of the Culture Festival have brought presidents, prime ministers, diplomats, dignitaries, spiritual leaders, social activists, artists, and people of all races, religions, and political stances together in the spirit of global unity and vibrant celebration.

Admission to the Festival is by registration, and interested attendees are encouraged to  visit www.artofliving.ng.

FREE, TRANSPARENT AND CREDIBLE ELECTIONS INDISPENSABLE TO PEACE AND STABILITY IN WEST AFRICA, PRESIDENT BUHARI DECLARES

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Monrovia, Liberia called on leaders in West Africa to do all within their powers to ensure that elections are conducted in their countries in an atmosphere of trust, freedom and transparency as this is the only way the sub-region can be insulated from the scourge of unconstitutional take overs that reared its head in three countries recently.

President Buhari made this call this in a goodwill message to the Government and people of Liberia as he joined other world leaders on the occasion of the 175th Independence Anniversary of the West African nation.

According to the President, democracy and good governance must take its roots on the African continent to sustain peace, stability and development while leaders must redouble their efforts to guarantee the irreversibility of democracy.

“I would like to use the opportunity of this event to address an important issue affecting three countries in the ECOWAS region; Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

“All the three nations have National Elections in 2023. In Nigeria, we are working towards a free, fair, transparent, credible and acceptable outcome of elections and their results, it is important and necessary for all our countries to key into these resolves as they are indispensable to peace and stability in our countries and sub-region.

“The deepening of democracy and good governance are essential antidotes to check-mate unconstitutional change of governments as we sadly witnessed within the last three years in three countries within our sub-region. We must strengthen our efforts to guarantee the irreversibility of democracy in our sub-region and Africa,” he said.

President Buhari used the opportunity to recall Nigeria’s leading roles that pulled the country back from its fratricidal insurrection in the 90s, adding that his presence at the celebrations underscores his strong belief in cementing existing bilateral ties:

“Nigeria’s contributions to the survival and safety of Liberia are well known. The dark period of your country’s civil war from 1989 to 1997, was a period that Nigeria invested hugely for peace in Liberia and indeed stability in the rest of the ECOWAS sub-region. May those dark days never re-surface in our countries and sub-region.”

The Nigerian leader commended his Liberian counterpart, Dr. George Manneh Weah, for his demonstration of love for the country and the pursuance of peace, unity and progress, as evidenced by people-oriented projects executed with the sole purpose of taking the country to greater heights within the limited resources available. While urging the Liberian leader to do more, he assured him of Nigeria’s continued support in this regard:

“Your Excellency’s policy of development launched in 2018 as well as the recently launched youth empowerment program, targeted at comprehensively addressing the problems of youth restiveness in Liberia and equally aimed at rescuing the disadvantaged youths (ZOGOS in local parlance) from drug addictions and other forms of social vices and transforming them into useful members of the Liberian society, are clearly very appropriate policies to lift up the most vulnerable.

“Permit me to assure you and all Liberians that Nigeria, as a good partner and a dependable ally, would continue to support you in these efforts, within the limit of our resources. This brings to the fore, the need for strengthening and broadening the levels of collaboration and cooperation between our two countries, both bilaterally and multilaterally, within the ECOWAS, AU and the UN, in order to adequately tackle the common national, sub-regional and global challenges.”

The President of Liberia, Dr. George Weah, thanked President Buhari and other West African leaders for their attendance and to our President in particular, “thank you Mr. President and the good people of Nigeria. Without your support we would not have had peace.”
